Zack Snyder Actually Finishing DC Movies At Netflix?

The prolific filmmaker’s work on 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League proved that he still has a lot of love, energy, and understanding for these golden age heroes. It’s left many fans wishing for Snyder’s return, even if it means helming a film under Gunn’s umbrella.

Now, according to a write-up in Comicbookmovie, Zack Snyder has expressed interest in returning to the DCU, but only if Netflix could license the iconic characters, allowing him to provide a proper conclusion to his DCEU.

Snyder began his creative direction of the live-action DC films previously known as the DCEU in 2013 when he directed the first Henry Cavill Superman outing, Man of Steel.

While bringing Zack Snyder back would serve as a poetic conclusion to the now decade-long franchise, it does seem highly unlikely that James Gunn would give Snyder the chance.

Gunn has already worked hard to end and restructure the cinematic universe in preparation for his grand re-opening.

Plus, the characters and properties are owned by Warner Discovery, who would almost certainly prefer to keep all of their properties on the in-house streaming network Max, and likely wouldn’t allow a Netflix-owned version.

This streaming condition should come as no surprise, however, as Zack Snyder has found a great deal of success working with Netflix ever since his DC departure in 2017.

Zack Snyder stepped down in the middle of Justice League‘s production due to a harrowing family tragedy, allowing former Marvel filmmaker Joss Whedon to step in and conclude the film on his behalf.

Unfortunately, it is now known that Whedon was abusive to the staff and screen actors, resulting in a jumbled mess of a film, rife with out-of-place humor and disappointing plot resolutions.

While Zack Snyder briefly returned to DC to provide his reshot and recut version of the film in 2021, he never officially returned to helm the conclusion of his Justice League franchise.

Instead, the filmmaker partnered with Netflix to helm the Dave Bautista-led Army of the Dead and the upcoming two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon to life.

Snyder is also set to direct an upcoming sequel and television spin-off of Army of the Dead for the streamer, signaling a strong and ongoing relationship that leaves him with little interest in returning to Warner Discovery with his hat in his hands.

Netflix president Scott Stuber has expressed interest in attaining the rights to characters such as Batman and Superman to give Zack Snyder his epic DC finale wish, though the chances of a deal like this being made seem incredibly slim.

This is particularly true due to Gunn’s newfound DC Elseworlds banner, which houses non-canon films such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman and Todd Phillips’ Joker, proving that even outside of Gunn’s filmmaking umbrella, licensed DC characters have a home streaming on Max.

That being said, it isn’t completely impossible to share the rights to these characters, as Sony and Marvel have done in recent years with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.
