Dune 3 Put On Hold Because Of Director’s Sanity?
Denis Villeneuve is just about all Dune-d out. According to Variety, the franchise director is more than willing to continue trudging forward with the book-turned-film series but may need a bit of a break before heading directly into Dune 3. During an interview with South Korean press, Villeneuve said that for his “mental sanity,” he’s planning on shifting gears to “do something in between” the upcoming sequel and what-would-be threequel.
Denis Villeneuve’s First Dune Film Released In 2021
Denis Villeneuve first dipped into the sci-fi world of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novels with 2021’s Dune, a project that would not only sweep the global box office but also nab a whopping 10 Academy Award nominations. What made the project’s success all the more impressive was the fact that it was released to streaming the same day, giving eager viewers a chance to dip out on the theatrical crowds and watch it from the comfort of their own homes. With the hype surrounding the first installment, Dune 2 was quickly green-lit with Dune 3 seemingly inevitable.
Dune: Part Two Releases In 2024
As for the sequel, which is set to arrive in theaters on March 1, 2024, Villeneuve is more excited to share the film with audiences than he was for the first film. Given that several of the characters have already been introduced, the director says there’s already a background, giving audiences a deeper connection to the drama they’ll see play out on screen. Should he eventually return for Dune 3, it’s likely that Villeneuve would really dig into those character arcs and dynamics that have made the story the celebrated title that it is.
Could Dune 3 Be Abandoned?
While James Cameron may be happy to dedicate two decades of his life to the Avatar franchise, it’s completely understandable why Denis Villeneuve would need to take a breather between Dune 2 and Dune 3. But, this shouldn’t leave fans in fear as the director is confident that he’ll “go back to Arrakis.” Referring to it as “this planet that I love,” the filmmaker’s comments should give hope to his dedicated followers that he won’t turn his back on Dune any time soon.
Other Denis Villeneuve Sci-Fi Movies
Regardless, Denis Villeneuve knew that when he took on the title of director for Dune, he had a long road ahead of him as there’s a sprawling amount of source material to cover. Known for his work behind other sci-fi masterpieces including Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, the filmmaker was the perfect man for the job of bringing Herbert’s futuristic world to dazzling and vibrant life on the big screen. Understanding that the fandom would want a Dune 2 and Dune 3, Villeneuve still took on the challenge of lending his creative vision to the project.
Dune 2 Introduces New Characters
But, before there can be a Dune 3, there must be Dune 2, and, as mentioned, audiences can expect the next installment in Villeneuve’s film series to arrive this spring. The film will see plenty of familiar faces as well as some new ones mixed into the fold as Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides continues his trek. Included in the cast are Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Florence Pugh, and Christopher Walken.
