Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will presumably return to the Chuck E Cheese-like abandoned pizzeria, where haunted animatronics cause terror to anyone who enters. The first film, which was released in theaters and on Peacock, featured Josh Hutcherson as a security guard who faces off against these robotic puppets. Blumhouse and Universal brought the world of the video game, created by Scott Cawthon, to life in a faithful adaptation that pleased fans of the series and horror fans alike.

Scott Cawthon also co-wrote and executive produced the film, so it seems likely they would bring him back for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 for creative continuity. The film was a massive success and brought in nearly $300 million at the global box office against a budget of $20 million. The tremendous box office haul against the shoestring budget made the film the highest-grossing film for Blumhouse to date.

It’s certainly been an interesting road for the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, considering it was just known as an indie horror game not too long ago. Following the release of the initial game, the creepy setting and jumpscares made the game a massive hit on platforms like Twitch, where people watched popular streamers play the game. The game ended up being a runaway success and spawned multiple sequels and spin-offs, along with the latest film adaptation and now the sequel Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

Undoubtedly, the runaway success of the film will likely be bringing people back to the game or introducing some people to the game for the first time. Like the film, players will find themselves navigating through Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza using limited resources and a surveillance system to keep themselves safe. The seemingly docile animatronics become malevolent entities at night that relentlessly hunt the player, adding a ton of horror and suspense to the gameplay.

The first film in the series did a great job of capturing the eerie atmosphere and the gameplay loop of the games, so it will be interesting to see what direction Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 decides to go. There are plenty of games left for the film series to draw inspiration and source material from, so perhaps we’ll be seeing Jeremy Fitzgerald, the protagonist of the second game, take over as the main character in the second film.
