Bosch Spinoff Series Is Happening, Focused On The Perfect Character
Fans of the underrated Prime Video series Bosch are in luck, as the show is coming back with a spin-off series focused on Detective Renee Ballard, who is assigned to lead the LAPD’s new cold case division. The Prime Video description promises a heavy lift for Ballard, who is left managing a poorly funded unit filled with volunteers and the largest caseload of any department. The currently untitled new Bosch spinoff is based on author Michael Connelly’s characters, with Connelly also on board as producer along with Fabel Entertainment.
The plot has more than just Ballard desperately trying to get an insane caseload under control as she also uncovers a conspiracy that leads her to turn to her retired colleague Harry Bosch for some assistance. Titus Welliver will be reprising his role. Ballard has been in many of Connelly’s novels, so it will be great for fans to see her brought to the screen.
Lauren Anderson, Head of AVOD Originals, Unscripted, and Targeted Programming at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed enthusiasm about the project, saying, “We look forward to expanding the Bosch universe with Michael and introducing viewers to Ballard’s personal approach to pursuing justice.”
Connelly is excited to bring Ballard’s story to the screen, promising that the series will have the “authenticity and propulsive momentum” of the Prime Video sequel series Bosch: Legacy. Along with Michael Connelly, executive producers on the series will be Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, and Fabel Entertainment’s Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate.
While we wait to learn more about Detective Renee Ballard’s own story in this ever-expanding universe, the current sequel series Bosch: Legacy is still going strong. The series continues to follow the journey of the titular homicide detective as he pivots to work as a private investigator. The series also follows attorney Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) and Maddie Bosch’s (Madison Lintz) journey as a rookie patrol cop in the LAPD.
The Bosch franchise doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon, as Legacy was renewed for a third season before the second season even premiered. With this new series focusing on Detective Renee Ballard, it seems like the universe can continue to grow even if Titus Welliver’s titular character isn’t directly the lead. In any case, the mystery franchise continues to be a popular series from both a critical and commercial perspective for Prime Video, so it’s not surprising that Amazon wants to capitalize on it.
