Captain America: Brave New World Scrapping Action Scenes And Starting From Scratch
According to World of Reel, we’re going to have to wait quite a bit longer for Captain America: Brave New World due to extensive five-month reshoots. Reportedly, Marvel is not happy with some of the action scenes in the rough cut of the film, with the critique that the scenes aren’t “big or satisfying” enough. It doesn’t help that there was also a reportedly poor test screening of the film earlier this year, which also is likely contributing to the decision to do these reshoots.
Five Months Of Reshoots
Of course, extensive five-month reshoots also means that Captain America: Brave New World is also getting its release date pushed, something that Marvel did with several of its films following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike. The film is getting quite a big push, though, with it being released over a year past its current release and being moved to February 2025. Production challenges and poor test screenings are never good news, so hopefully, these reshoots will help to right the ship.
Action Scenes Not Big Enough
The report further details that the Captain America: Brave New World reshoots will be specifically reworking three major action sequences in the film from the ground up. Lead actors Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford are reportedly part of this reshoot process that will begin in January and run through May. Although the film initially finishes the primary filming process in June, it seems like there is a lot more work to be done at this point.
A New Captain
Captain America: Brave New World is set to be a pretty big film for the MCU going forward, as it was supposed to be the end of Phase 5, though that has likely changed with the various films being shifted around. It also marks Anthony Mackie’s first film as Captain America after he accepted the mantle at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Disney+ series. Additionally, it will be bringing back some characters from one of the very first MCU films, The Incredible Hulk, with Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns/Leader and Liv Tyler’s Betty Ross.
Captain America: Brave New World is directed by Julius Onah and will also star Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Carl Lumbly, Harrison Ford, Xosha Roquemore, and Seth Rollins. Harrison Ford will also be making his debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, taking over the role from the late William Hurt. Ford is also set to appear in Thunderbolts, though that film has also been pushed due to production difficulties and will come out in summer 2025.
Blade Also Delayed
Mahershala Ali’s Blade has also been pushed, so there is quite a lot of shifting around in the MCU’s release schedule. In fact, that means the only film we’ll be seeing from the MCU in 2024 is Deadpool 3. People are starting to get a bit of superhero fatigue, so maybe these delays will end up being a good thing and make people more excited to see films like Captain America: Brave New World.
A Better Film In The Works?
In any case, Captain America: Brave New World now has a lot more time to fix things. Hopefully, these reshoots will lead to a better film when the time comes to release it. In the meantime, you can see the most recent MCU film, The Marvels, in theaters now and check out the most recent Marvel series, Loki, on Disney+.
