Chris Pine Confident Sequel To Major Hit Is Happening
Chris Pine is a busy guy. Between the Star Trek reboot series of films and the DCEU’s Wonder Woman movies, the actor has multiple sci-fi/fantasy franchises under his belt. But while the current Star Trek films seem to be on indefinite hiatus, and Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman series is officially dead, Pine still has one potential franchise that could become bigger than both: Dungeons & Dragons, and according to IGN, Chris is definitely pining for a sequel to this year’s sleeper hit.
Chris Pine Confident A Dungeons & Dragons Sequel Will Happen
During a recent interview, Chris Pine revealed that he’s confident that a sequel to this year’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves will hit theaters eventually. “I’ve heard some rumors about it, but I don’t know anything yet.” Pine admitted when asked about a potential sequel. The actor went on to say that though he has no official news of a D&D sequel, he feels “pretty confident that it may happen.”
Of course, an Honor Among Thieves sequel without Chris Pine’s roguish bard Edgin Darvis wouldn’t be much fun. Thankfully, a follow-up question asking Pine if he would want to return to the Dungeons & Dragons world was answered with an emphatic “Absolutely!”
Dungeons & Dragons’ Box Office Success
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves debuted in March of this year and managed to rack up a box office total of $208.2 million against a $150 budget. Not a particularly great performance money-wise, but fans of the tabletop roleplaying game enjoyed the film immensely, and all of that fan support could be enough to convince Paramount to pony up for a second film. “I’m just happy it was good,” said executive producer Kyle Brink. “The trajectory for D&D movies is going up tremendously. We’re happy with the fan reaction and the critical reaction.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 Boosts Popularity
Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons have been experiencing a resurgence in popularity as of late thanks to shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20, which feature famous people rolling dice, slaying Orcs, and just having the time of their lives. This year, in particular, has seen not only Chris Pine’s Dungeons & Dragons movie but also the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, a video game RPG that’s been getting nothing but rave reviews since its release. Baldur’s Gate 3 was such a big deal in the gaming world that it even showed up in South Park’s recent Panderverse special.
Paramount Is On Board Under One Condition
Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount, has said that he’s definitely open to making a sequel, but with one very important caveat. Any subsequent Dungeons & Dragons offering has to be filmed for less money than the first one. “We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less,” Robbins said in regards to a sequel.
Will Chris Pine Be Willing To Return?
The real question is now, would Chris Pine be willing to take a pay cut in exchange for a Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2? Pine was paid a hefty $11.5 million for his first D&D outing, according to reports. Would a $6 million payday be enough to convince the actor to pick up his loot and go adventuring again, or would Paramount have to make cuts somewhere else?
Only time will tell.
