Star Trek: Section 31 Movie Finally Underway?
Now that the writers and actors strikes have concluded, all projects that weren’t canceled are getting back to work. Since the Stark Trek: Section 31 movie script was completed before the WGA strike began earlier this spring, that means that the crews can move straight on to preparing for production. And, according to Trek Movie, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Star Trek: Section 31 In Pre-Production
The interstellar saga of Star Trek is set to expand further as the Paramount+ streaming platform gears up for the production of the highly anticipated Star Trek: Section 31 movie.
The project, which has been codenamed “Dovercourt,” is in the early stages of pre-production, with a reported start time in November.
In Section 31, Michelle Yeoh will be reprising her role as the former Emperor Philippa Georgiou from Star Trek: Discovery. The production for the feature was meant to begin in October.
But as the strikes were still ongoing at that time, it was impossible for the movie to begin filming. Despite the setbacks, the resumption of work in Hollywood signals a promising step forward for the Star Trek franchise.
Star Trek: Section 31 Announced Before Strikes
Paramount+ initially announced Section 31 in April, about a month before the writers’ strike began.
After half a year of delays and many questions as to what projects would still be greenlit once the strikes were over, the Directors Guild of Canada’s recent production listing update now places the movie on their “Rumour List,” signaling a potential start of pre-production later this month.
While this serves as an early sign of forward momentum, it’s not an official confirmation, and such listings are subject to change.
Strange New Worlds Also Underway
While Section 31 moving forward is just a rumor at this point, another Star Trek project is officially underway. Strange New Worlds Season 3 is already entering pre-production.
To confirm, the cast and crew from the series have posted official mentions about the new season on their social media.
Meanwhile, despite no official reports, executive producer Alex Kurtzman, speaking at New York Comic Con in October, reassured fans that Section 31 is back on track.
Star Trek: Section 31 With Big Ambitions
The script, penned by Craig Sweeny, was completed before the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike in May. Olatunde Osunsanmi, the producing director of Star Trek: Discovery, is set to helm the project for Paramount+.
Both Section 31 and the upcoming Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will share assets and some stages, potentially running in parallel.
While the plot details remain shrouded in mystery, Michelle Yeoh describes the movie as “Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy.
In Section 31, Yeoh’s Emperor Philippa Georgiou will lead a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets while confronting the sins of her past.
Only Confirmed Cast Member
As of now, Yeoh is the only confirmed cast member, leaving fans speculating about the potential of familiar faces from other Star Trek content or new additions added to the ensemble being introduced in the upcoming movie.
Shazad Latif, who played Ash Tyler, is a possibility, having taken over Starfleet’s Section 31 division in the Season 2 finale of Star Trek: Discovery.
Star Trek: Section 31 Timeline
As Paramount+ continues to expand its Star Trek offerings, including the upcoming fifth and final season of Discovery, the production timeline for Section 31 remains uncertain.
Fans eagerly await further updates on this evolving story, and we’re eagerly waiting to post them, so stay tuned for the latest developments in the Star Trek universe.
