Cobra Kai Casts Dexter Star As Iconic Karate Kid Character
Deadline reports that Dexter star C.S. Lee will be appearing in the sixth and final season of Netflix’s Cobra Kai. According to sources, Lee will take on the role of Master Kim Sun-Young, a character who has only been portrayed by both Jun Chong (The Karate Kid) and Don Lee (Cobra Kai) through flashback sequences across the franchise.
C.S. Lee As Master Kim
At this point in season 6’s development, it remains to be seen whether Master Kim will continue to be seen through flashback sequences, or if the iconic character will be living in the present tense.
It’s worth noting that the current Cobra Kai narrative suggests that Master Kim is presumed dead, and it’s fair to assume that we’ll be presented with more flashback sequences.
But given that the series is about to kick off its final season, there’s no knowing what kind of surprises are in store for the Netflix series.
Strikes Delayed Cobra Kai
Cobra Kai’s final season was originally slated for a December release, but production halted on May 2 when the WGA strike shut down the writer’s room.
The writing staff has been hard at work since the strike came to a resolution in late September, but the filming isn’t expected to start until early 2024.
Despite the delays, creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg have assured fans that the show will go out with a bang, and be the “biggest season of Cobra Kai yet.”
Cobra Kai Is A Karate Kid Sequel
Taking place over 30 years after the events that occurred in the original Karate Kid films from the ’80s and early ’90s, Cobra Kai premiered in 2017.
It examines the Miyagi-Verse from Johnny Lawrence’s perspective after he takes stock of his life and decides to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo in his 50s.
But reopening the dojo also rekindles Lawrence’s rivalry with Daniel LaRusso, who defeated him in the All Valley Karate Tournament when they were kids.
What makes the series so effective is the fact that Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, and many other original cast members all reprised their respective roles for the series.
Cobra Kai Gets It Right
It’s one thing to breathe new life into a franchise for the sake of nostalgia. But Cobra Kai shows audiences how it’s done by recognizing that the natural chemistry between its universe’s characters is what made the Karate Kid movies so well-received in the first place.
It’s almost as if the actors grew up with their characters, and after five seasons they continue to grow and inspire a whole new generation of underdogs who weren’t around to witness original films upon their initial release.
Catch Up With Cobra Kai
While we’re waiting for a release date for Cobra Kai’s final season, now’s as good a time as ever to revisit the series and brush up on the course of events that have led us to this point in the narrative.
And there are plenty of loose ends that need to be tied up, like Kreese’s prison break which left us with a cliffhanger at the end of season 5.
Season 6 Coming Soon
Expect more Cobra Kai updates as season 6 continues to develop. As of this writing, there is no set release date for the final season, but we will have a clearer picture in the coming months once the details are ironed out, and filming commences in early 2024.
