Top Gun: Maverick Spoiler Leads To Gun Confrontation Between Police Officers
Getting annoyed by spoilers is pretty common, but it’s not annoying enough to hold a gun up to someone. Except that’s exactly what happened in Sydney, Australia, as a police officer named Dominic Gaynor pleaded guilty to the charge of “carrying a firearm with disregard” for a colleague’s safety after an exchange over spoilers for Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.
According to court documents reported by Variety, police officer Gaynor allegedly took out his gun and pointed it in the vicinity of his fellow officer Morgan Royston after Royston told him, “I’ll spoil it for you,” when discussing the Top Gun sequel, which Royston had seen the day before.
The Police Officer Pointed His Gun At A Co-Worker
Gaynor reportedly responded to Royston’s threat to spoil Top Gun: Maverick by saying, “Don’t spoil the movie,” and “I’ll shoot you,” while allegedly taking his Glock out of his holster and pointing it in Royston’s vicinity for five seconds. The court documents further note that Gaynor’s finger was on the receiver and not the trigger and that Gaynor was allegedly laughing during the incident, implying he was joking. Gaylor’s lawyer commented on the event as “a case where the skylarking and tomfoolery in an employment context has gone awry.”
The Aftermath
However, during the court proceedings, Royston has since revealed that the Top Gun: Maverick spoiler incident has taken an emotional toll on him. Royston acknowledged that joking among police officers is common but that this incident crossed a line that left him with feelings of “overwhelming shock and fear.” Royston also expressed he felt a loss of trust in the NSW Police Force and that he now feels compelled to ensure other police officers don’t have their hands on their firearms.
The Police Officer’s Punishment
While Gaynor’s lawyer admitted that his client made a mistake during the Top Gun: Maverick incident, he did try to argue that a conviction would lead to Gaynor being removed from the police force and that it would “cost him dearly.” The court eventually came to the decision to give Gaynor a community correction order for two years, 100 hours of community service, and a recorded conviction. Undoubtedly, Gaynor might be considering changing how much he cares about spoilers.
