Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Has An Appa-Awesome Trailer
Netflix has just dropped a new Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer (via Geeked Week 2023 celebrations) giving excited fans of the series a few telling shots of just how excellent the show’s visual appeal will be.
The Netflix adaptation of the animated series was first announced in 2018, so fans have been waiting for quite some time to get a clear glimpse at what production has to offer. The trailer is here finally, and it’s really something.
In the past five years, the specifics of Avatar: The Last Airbender series have gone through some significant changes.
Originally, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were set to head production of the series, but the duo resigned from their position in 2020, citing creative differences.
Albert Kim (Executive Producer of the Fox hit series Sleepy Hollow) then stepped in as writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the new live-action adaptation.
The series is set to have eight, hour-long episodes, starring Gordon Cormier (Joe in The Stand, 2020) as Aang, Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why) as Sokka, Kiawentiio (Beans, 2020) as Katara, and Dallas Liu (PEN15) as Prince Zuko.
Though Netflix has teased its way through the past few months with announcements of the actors and actresses in the new Avatar: The Last Airbender series, a brief teaser trailer, and piecy news of various elements of the show, today’s drop marks the first official look at the upcoming series and a long-awaited release date.
The new Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer opens with a shot of what you can imagine is Sozin’s comet and a theatrical voice speaking of time.
As the voice talks of the strangeness of time, the trailer quickly shows clips of some fire bending before moving on to show Aang’s iceberg and Katara and Sokka (who both look excellent in the role).
Then, the Avatar: The Last Airbender trailer moves on to an extensive shot of Omashu (the Earth kingdom) before the revelation of Prince Zuko, Uncle Iroh, and Ozai leads to a few things that should be mentioned. First, Prince Zuko’s scarring is pretty tame compared to that of the animated series.
Second, the trailer shows Ozai’s face, whereas the animated series keeps his face hidden for a while to build up the mystery and fear surrounding the character. Let’s hope this isn’t a big deal in the grand scheme of things.
After a peak into the Avatar: The Last Airbender Fire Nation characters, the Kyoshi warriors are briefly shown, and the romance between Sokka and Suki is hinted at. Then you’ll see some serious and thrilling action clips with several clips featuring Aang and a sneak peek of Crescent Island (which looks gorgeous).
Then it happens … Appa appears! You never really get a good look at Appa’s face, but from what the trailer does show, fans are going to be happy with the live-action Appa. Appa in all his glorious large fluffiness looks just as helpful and cozy as he was in the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series.
You’ll get a good look at Momo too while the whole “Gaang” flies through the air with triumphant music glazing the background of the scene.
The new trailer can be found in its entirety on YouTube. Watch it, but try to hold back your excitement as the show will not officially be released on Netflix until February 22, 2024.
