“Barbenheimer,” the bizarre sensation that pretty much saved the movie theater industry over the summer is now a real movie thanks to B-movie horror icon Charles Band. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Band, the man behind the Full Moon banner and a string of cult classics like Puppet Master, Ghoulies, Trancers, Demonic Toys, Evil Bong, and Re-Animator, is cashing in on one of the strangest trends of the year. And, yeah, he’s totally doing it for the money.

Barbenheimer Saved The Theaters

Many theaters struggled to survive after being shut down during the pandemic, and even when the cinemas re-opened, a lot of places found it hard to sell enough tickets to combat the events of the past year. Plus, the theaters had to deal with the rising popularity of streaming and somehow convince people to spend $50 on a night out, often to watch a sub-par film on the silver screen.

The industry began to see the light at the end of the tunnel when Top Gun: Maverick and Everything, Everywhere, All At Once were released in 2022, but it wasn’t until the Barbenheimer sensation of this past summer that the industry saw its first glimmer of success in a long time.

The Sensation Took Over The Internet, Becoming A Cultural Phenomenon

“Barbenheimer” is the cultural phenomenon involving two polar opposite films — Barbie, Greta Gewig’s bright and colorful feminism ballad about the Mattel doll, Barbie, and Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller chronically the life of physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the Manhattan Project.

This stark juxtaposition inspired a comedic frenzy on the internet, with memes and merchandise flooding the digital landscape, and millions of people across the world purchasing tickets to watch the two films back to back. Now it’s inspiring Charles Band to make his 397th feature film.

Band admitted that he’s making the film, titled Barbenheimer, to cash in on the internet sensation. “It’s 100 percent true,” he says. “But it’s also an opportunity to have fun with the bizarre coupling of these two movies … You mix that together and you have such an opportunity for dark humor.”

In Barbenhimer, Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer Leaves Dolltopia And Creates A Nuclear Bomb

The plot revolves around the brilliant scientist doll, Dr. Bambi J Barbenheimer, who resides in the whimsical realm of Dolltopia, which, similar to Gerwig’s Barbie, is a paradise of endless summers and beach parties. Driven to action by the maltreatment of dolls by human children, Dr. Barbenheimer takes a bold leap into the real world, facing the darkest facets of humanity.

Motivated by what she’s seen, Dr. Barbenheimer vows to construct a colossal nuclear bomb with one clear aim: to reshape the world. As the synopsis cheekily puts it, “They got great looks and a super attitude! Oh, and now they’ve got the bomb.”

Barbenheimer Will Release Sometime In 2024

According to Band, it was his biographer, Adam Felber, who came up with the idea to bring Barbenheimer to life. Soon after, a script had been penned as well as a couple of songs, written by Brian Wecht who makes up half of Ninja Sex Party, an American musical comedy duo. The film is set to release in 2024 and has a budget of $1 million, which makes it a low-budget production, though it will be Band’s most expensive feature yet.
