Prison Break Revival Series Happening At Hulu
A Prison Break revival Hulu is in the early stages of development at Hulu. According to Deadline, Elgin James, known for his work on Mayans M.C., will serve as writer and executive producer for the new show under his Sierra Drive banner.
While specific details about the plot are under wraps, the series is described as a “new chapter set in the world of the original.”
New Prison Break Characters
However, the revival is set to introduce entirely new characters and will not feature Prison Break stars Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell, who played Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, respectively.
In 2020, Miller said he had no intentions of reprising his role as Scofield, citing his desire to move away from playing straight characters.
The new series follows James’ deal with the Disney-owned 20th Television, the studio responsible for the original series and the new off-shoot. The revival is executive produced by Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring along with Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz, who held the same positions while working on the original.
The Original Prison Break
Prison Break first aired on the Fox network in 2005 and ran for four seasons. The series follows structural engineer Michael Scofield, who devises an elaborate plan to break his wrongly convicted brother, Lincoln Burrows, out of the maximum-security Fox River State Penitentiary, where he’s facing the death penalty for a crime he didn’t commit.
Prison Break Premise
Michael intentionally gets himself incarcerated in the same prison to put his plan into action. The elaborate prison break involves getting tattoos all over his body that contain hidden escape routes, information, and secrets. As the story unfolds, Michael, Lincoln, and a group of other inmates work together to escape while dealing with various challenges along the way.
Prison Break: The Final Break
In 2009, Prison Break: The Final Break was released, serving as an epilogue to the “Prison Break” series. It was released directly to DVD and Blu-ray in July 2009, a few weeks after the series concluded its fourth season. The movie, which picked up the story shortly before the series finale, was intended to provide closure to the show’s storylines and characters.
Critical Acclaim For The Original
Prison Break received critical acclaim and a dedicated fan following during its original run. Critics and viewers were drawn to its intriguing premise and strong performances by the cast. After a long hiatus, a fifth season was produced in 2017, picking up several years after the events of the original series and the television movie Prison Break: The Final Break.
Often referred to as Prison Break: Resurrection, the story focuses on Michael Scofield, who was presumed dead at the end of the show’s original run. However, he is revealed to be alive and imprisoned in a Yemeni prison. The reasons for his incarceration and apparent faked death are unknown, and it becomes evident that he is in grave danger.
Mixed Reviews For Finale
Lincoln Burrows learns of his brother’s survival and, along with other characters from the original Prison Break, works to engineer Michael’s escape from the dangerous prison.
Season 5 received mixed reviews. While it generated excitement among long-time fans, some critics felt that the plot was convoluted and that the magic of the earlier seasons was not recaptured.
