Doctor Who Announces New Spinoff That Classic Fans Will Love
The holiday season is starting early for fans of the Doctor Who franchise as more than 800 episodes of the beloved series are hitting BBC iPlayer today, November 1. An exciting day for the fandom, the new location for all things Who is being dubbed The Whoniverse, but that’s far from the most thrilling part of the day. As BBC revealed, a six-part series will also be landing on the platform titled Tales of the TARDIS which will see a slew of fan-favorite pairs hop onto a souped-up TARDIS to explore together.
Classic Doctor Who Characters Return In Tales of the TARDIS
In what sounds to be a bit of a reunion special mixed with a walk down memory lane, the six installments will catch up with Doctors and companions including Maureen O’Brien and Peter Purves, Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury, Katy Manning and Daniel Anthony, Peter Davison and Janet Fielding, Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant, and Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred. Each of these classic Doctor Who pals will appear in their own standalone episode which will weave new content in with the old.
Russel T. Davies And Phil Ford Serve As Writers For The Spinoff
The Doctor Who special batch of episodes will also be a bit of a throwback for its writing team, which will be composed of the current showrunner Russel T. Davies and Who-writers of yesteryear including Phil Ford and Pete McTighe. With their powers combined, the trio is hoping to bring the show’s dedicated fandom a fun off-shoot that will not only keep them entertained but also thank them for the years of support they’ve given the ever-changing series. Plus, who wouldn’t want to reunite with what feels like a group of old friends and see what they’ve been up to after all of this time?
The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials Premeire November 25
Along with the launch of The Whoniverse and Tales of the TARDIS, November will also be an extra exciting month for Doctor Who fans as the series is celebrating its 60th anniversary in a very big way. On November 25, Disney+ will kick off the first of three specials with two others to follow on December 2 and December 9. Featuring performances from returning Doctor, David Tennant, and his trusty companion, Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble, the trio of specials will be just the thing to put a smile on Doctor Who fans everywhere.
Ncuti Gatwa Is The 14th Doctor
Beyond the 60th anniversary lies the 14th Season of Doctor Who with Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa starring as the titular time traveler. He’ll be joined by Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson who will star as his companion, Ruby Sunday. Also appearing in the upcoming season will be Broadway, TV, and film star Jonathan Groff, Anita Dobson (Red Dwarf), Ruth Madeley (The Cleaner), Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable), and Ru Paul’s Drag Race winner, Jinx Monsoon.
New Seasons Of Doctor Who Are Expected Sometime In 2024
As of right now, no release date for Doctor Who’s 14th season has been revealed, but it’s expected to arrive somewhere during the first half of 2024. Fans in the U.S. will be happy to know that episodes will head directly to Disney+ for easy streaming while those in the UK can continue to catch it on BBC. With so much content to tune into on The Whoniverse and the brand-new Tales of the TARDIS, it’s a terrific time to be a Doctor Who fan.
