This Is The Year You Must Buy A PS5, Here’s Why
Big news broke this week regarding Sony’s PlayStation 5 gaming console (via TechSpot), stating that the tech giant can now ensure a total supply of the popular console will be available to buyers this holiday season.
Though the gaming system has been out on the market for more than three years now, supply chain issues crippled the production of the system, making the PS5 market a frightful free-for-all for scalpers.
The upcoming Holiday season is the first since the launch of the PlayStation 5 that Sony can guarantee a total supply for consumers.
In 2020, when the PS5 first dropped, it was nearly impossible to get a system unless you had a lot of money and luck on your side. Some scalpers were selling the console for more than three times the going retail price, and gamers were paying that much to get a PS5 of their own.
News of the company’s victory over the supply shortage came just in time for what is expected to be the strongest-ever season for PS5 sales. SIE senior vice president and head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, said that anyone who wants a PS5 this season will have access to one, and they won’t have to pay a super-inflated sum to make their purchase.
Another notable factor making it a big year for Sony’s PS5 console is that the PS5 Slim launches in November of this year.
In April of this year (2023), there were even reports saying that PS5 scalpers were having trouble selling the consoles they had, and some listings for the system were even set at prices underneath the suggested retail price.
Sony is getting its proverbial ducks in a row just in time for the drop of the new PS5-exclusive game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Fans of the first Spider-Man have waited more than five years to see the second full game of the series, following the success of Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was more of a 1.5 sequel.
Spider-Man 2 was released to the market on October 20, 2023, and the game sold more than 2.5 million copies in just the first 24 hours of being on the “shelves.” The new game also set a new record as the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title ever.

Another notable factor making it a big year for Sony’s PS5 console is that the PS5 Slim launches in November of this year. The Slim is an estimated 30 percent smaller than the original PS5, carrying the same power and price. It has, however, been announced that those who wish to install the Slim’s disk drive will have to have access to the internet to do so.
SIE senior vice president and head of global marketing, Eric Lempel, also stated that he expects this year to be when Sony will finally meet its goal of selling 25 million PS5 units in 12 months. If the goal is reached, it’ll be the best year in the history of PlayStation consoles, beating a 25-year record set by the original PlayStation console of 22.6 million units sold in 12 months.
If you’re one of the many gamers who still have not been able to get their hands on a new PS5, this year is your year to shine … the year you can finally step your game up.
