New Buffy Series Corrects A Franchise Blunder
It’s been just a little over two decades since the world bid adieu to the Scooby Gang in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While the story continued for one more year in its spin-off series, Angel, and a handful of graphic novels and the like, characters like Cordelia and Tara were unjustly killed off in the original series. Now, Audible is preparing to right those sad, sad wrongs in a new series titled, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story.
Taking a chapter from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the audio series will see these characters (Cordelia, Tara, and Anya) come back from the dead via a multiverse loophole.
From Cordelia Chase’s (Charisma Carpenter) weird and untimely death in Angel to Tara’s (Amber Benson) fatal death-by-firearm, and even Anya’s (Emma Caulfield) death in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer finale, the hearts of fans were broken by every unforeseen kill-off.
Taking a chapter from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the audio series will see these characters come back from the dead via a multiverse loophole. What’s even more exciting is that in this alternate reality, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy was never the slayer at all, with Cordelia holding the honor of being the chosen one.
Charisma Carpenter’s takeover as the slayer in the world of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is a full one for the actress as she originally auditioned for the role of Buffy Summers back in the ‘90s.
In Audible’s latest production, Buffy fans will follow an adventure led by James Marster’s blondie vampire Spike, who, after crossing paths with a young and lost slayer named Indira (Laya DeLeon Hayes), helps the up-and-comer on her journey to become a rough and tough demon killing machine.
Meanwhile, in Cordelia’s universe, Spike’s ex, Drusilla (Juliet Landau) is causing rampant chaos giving the slayer no choice but to hop multiverses and get Spike’s help.
Also joining the voice-over fun will be Buffy stars including Anthony Head as everyone’s favorite Watcher, Giles, James Charles Leary’s fleshy demon, Clem, and Danny Strong’s Jonathan, who will also be coming back to life following his death at the hands of his pal, Andrew (Tom Lenk).
Charisma Carpenter’s takeover as the slayer in the world of Slayers: A Buffyverse Story is a full one for the actress as she originally auditioned for the role of Buffy Summers back in the ‘90s. Of course, we couldn’t imagine her in any other part as that of the selfish cheerleader who had one of the most redeeming and fulfilling character arcs in the entire franchise.
It will be interesting to see how Cordelia, Tara, Anya, and Jonathan’s lives are different in this multiverse adventure, leaving questions open about the people they’ve become and – perhaps most importantly – the partners they’ve ended up with.
Where To Catch The New Buffy Story
For those who have been missing the soothing voices of some of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s most beloved and notorious characters, Slayers: A Buffyverse Story couldn’t have come at a better time. While the show’s creator, Joss Whedon, may have had a staggering fall from grace over the last few years with a slew of cast members (including Chase) on not just Buffy but other productions speaking out against him, the Audible series gives fans a chance to reconnect with the characters in an entirely different way.
Grab your stakes, some space for nostalgia, and perhaps even a box of tissues and tune in for Slayers: A Buffyverse Story as it’s now streaming on Audible.
