Tron Getting Another New Movie? Disney Chief Reveals Amazing Project
Jennifer Lee, the Creative Chief Officer at Disney, has waved her magic wand and greenlit a very special upcoming animated film called Wish, which will be created to celebrate 100 years of magic since Walt and Roy Disney got together and created the world’s most iconic studio. However, while Wish seems cool and all, that’s not the kind of movie the people are asking for. While speaking with Collider to promote Wish, Lee was asked about the potential of a Tron animated film, to which the Disney exec responded that it’s definitely a possibility.
Released in 1982, the original Tron was a sci-fi/action movie featuring groundbreaking CGI effects (for the time). While Tron never became as iconic as other Disney films, especially animated classics like Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King, the flick eventually became a cult classic and received a sequel nearly 30 years after its release when Tron: Legacy debuted in 2010.
A Disney executive has hinted at the possibility of a Tron animated movie.
Since then, the Tron franchise released an animated TV show called Tron: Uprising that ran from 2012 – 2013 and will soon be receiving a trequel in Tron: Ares, likely to be released in 2025, but an animated movie has yet to be announced. When pressed about a Tron animated film, Lee was open to the idea and committed to bringing it up during her monthly directorial rendezvous, where Disney’s creative minds converge to brainstorm and exchange ideas.
Lee explained how Disney is a filmmaker-driven company and how every month, she sits down for a meal with the studio’s team of directors. After hearing about the excitement around a Tron animated feature, she promised to offer the idea up to any filmmaker at the table who might be “dreaming of that to happen.” She then joked that if no one bites, she can pass the blame on the movie makers.
While the Tron animated series only ran for a year, the franchise is not dead at Disney.
Previous experience has showcased that Tron does well in the animated world. While the franchise has primarily thrived in the realm of live-action cinema, wowing movie-goers with its unique blend of sci-fi and digital fantasy, Tron: Uprising briefly brought the franchise to animated life in 2012. The show garnered critical acclaim and even earned an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation – Art Direction.
While the Tron animated series only ran for a year, the franchise is not dead at Disney. The next chapter in the Tron saga, Tron: Ares, is currently in the works. Boasting a star-studded cast including Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Cameron Monaghan, the film promises to transport fans deeper into the digital frontier. Although a release date remains elusive due to the recent strikes, fans can likely expect the movie to debut in 2025.

Meanwhile, fans can revisit the original Tron and its sequel, Tron: Legacy, on Disney+ for a nostalgic journey through the neon-lit corridors of the Grid while dreaming up possibilities of a Tron animated feature.
If Jennifer Lee keeps her word and brings up the Tron animated idea at the next director’s lunch, then there’s a very good chance that the Tron franchise will continue to expand with more exciting content on the horizon.
