Spy x Family Season 2 Gets A Romantic First Look
Season 2 of Spy x Family is dropping soon, and a recent trailer reveals that love may be in the air for the series protagonist, Twilight. The trailer shows master spy Twilight in his civilian guise as Loid Forger attempting to start an actual romantic relationship with his fake wife, Yor Briar. The two go on a date with mixed results.
Spy x Family—confusingly pronounced “Spy Family”—tells the story of a superspy named Twilight who’s forced to create a fake family in order to get close to a major target. Twilight adopts the alias “Loid Forger” and convinces a woman who’s secretly a master assassin known as the Thorn Princess. Together, they adopt a young girl named Anya, who has secret telepathic abilities.

The fan-favorite anime is based on a manga of the same name written and drawn by Tatsuya Endo. The manga began in 2019 and remains ongoing. By September, Spy x Family reached a circulation of over 31 million copies, making it one of the best-selling Manga series of all time.
The anime version of Spy x Family debuted in April of last year and ran for 25 episodes in its first season. The upcoming second season was first announced in December of 2022, along with a theatrical film. Season 2 is set to air on October 7, 2023.
Critics and fans alike have fallen in love with the Spy x Family anime, with the majority of both sides citing psychic child Anya as the series’ secret weapon. Along with Family’s adorable little mindreader, the series has also been praised for its comedic timing and how it balances jokes with more serious spycraft. The series has also been revered for its animation, particularly during action sequences.

The CEO, president, and producer of Wit Studio, one of the studios that animates the series, George Wada, has been quoted as saying that the secret behind the anime’s success stems from the fact that people have had a tumultuous last few years and that people are “wanting to see something more lighthearted and friendly.”
The Movie
The speed with which a second season of Spy x Family was produced is surprising given that Wit and the other animation studio behind the anime, Cloverworks, had to work on Season 2 and the movie at the same time. The movie—Spy x Family: Code White—alone required all hands on deck from both studios. Wada has said that the youngest employees from both studios, as well as the “oldest staff members in their 50s and 60s,” were working side by side to complete Code White.
With all the animation and power focused on a feature film, it’s a mystery how Cloverworks and Wit Studio have a second season ready to go less than a year after the first season ended. Having a blueprint in the manga version of Spy x Family certainly helps. Hopefully, the studios didn’t rush new episodes out just to please fans.
Given the quality of Season 1, it’s doubtful that the new season will be anything less than spectacular. Spy x Family Season 2 debuts on October 7 on Crunchyroll.
