Although fans felt Star Trek: Picard was a bit uneven in the early seasons, the final season brought just about everyone around and provided an overall fantastic season of along with a fitting end to a fan-favorite character. Thus, many fans have been incredibly hyped about showrunner Terry Matalas’ proposed spin-off to Picard, titled Star Trek: Legacy. However, in an interview with TrekMovie.com, production designer Dave Blass indicated Paramount may be running out of time to lock down Matalas for the project, saying, “if he doesn’t get that offer soon, he’s going to be gone because everyone in the world saw what he did.”

Production designer Dave Blass says that Paramount is running out of time to lock down Terry Matalas for Star Trek: Legacy.

Blass is referring to the fact that Picard’s third season was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, which is no easy feat for a franchise that has such high expectations from its fan base. With success like that, it would be easy to see Terry Matalas getting offers to be a showrunner on other series before Paramount would get a chance to offer him Star Trek: Legacy. According to Blass, there is currently no work being done on the series to his knowledge.

Terry Matalas himself has echoed this report, saying that there is currently nothing going on in the realm of Star Trek: Legacy. As Blass points out, this is absolutely the time for CBS Studios and Paramount to be making moves since the WGA strike finally came to an end. The WGA strike started just two weeks after Picard aired its finale, so it makes sense that there hasn’t been any forward momentum on a follow-up since then.

Projects like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Section 31 film are on the way, so it would make sense to add Legacy to the schedule.

Ed Speleers, who plays Jean-Luc Picard’s son Jack Crusher in Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard, is another candidate to potentially star in Star Trek: Legacy

But now that the WGA strike is over, the studios are undoubtedly going to want to lock down their future projects as soon as possible, which means talented showrunners like Terry Matalas will likely be getting some big offers soon. Back in April, executive producer Alex Kurtzman and executive for Star Trek television at Paramount said that he has heard fans pleas for Star Trek: Legacy “loud and clear,” so it’s obviously on the radar for the studios.

Star Trek: Legacy, if it gets the green light, will reportedly star Jeri Ryan as Captain Seven of Nine of the USS Enterprise.

A massive fan petition was also started for the show to get the production green light, so it’s clear that fans are ready to tune in for the Picard follow-up if CBS Studios and Paramount are willing to make it.

It’s a bit baffling that CBS Studios and Paramount haven’t said anything else about Star Trek: Legacy, considering several other gestating franchise projects have been given the go-ahead to move forward. Projects like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Section 31 film are on the way, so it would make sense to add Legacy to the schedule.

Star Trek: Legacy, if it gets the green light, will reportedly star Jeri Ryan as Captain Seven of Nine of the USS Enterprise. Matalas also said that the series would incorporate other guest characters from the past, present, and future of the Trek franchise. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if CBS Studios and Paramount will make the right move.
