Netflix Reveals The Future Of One Piece
Netflix has officially renewed the live-action One Piece series for a second season just two weeks after the first season’s debut. “To the Straw Hat Grand Fleet… What did you think of season one of the live-action One Piece? I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios,” Eiichiro Oda says in the video announcement via social media.
Netflix has announced One Piece is getting a second season.
“It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it. To everyone who’s been a fan of One Piece for years, and to those who experienced One Piece for the first time, thank you so much,” Oda continued. “Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show!”
“The adventures of Inaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward! It’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient. From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor. We will see!” Oda added. The live-action show is an adaptation of his popular manga of the same name and follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy.
Luffy (played by Inaki Godoy) is a young pirate determined to locate the legendary One Piece in the vast Blue Sea, with the ultimate goal of becoming the Pirate King. But they aren’t the sole seekers of the legendary treasure. Armed with their abilities and steadfast bond, the Straw Hats brace themselves for the challenging journey, determined to fight for their dreams.
One Piece has dominated Netflix’s top 10 charts over the past two weeks, earning glowing reviews from everyone.
The One Piece cast also features Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. Vincent Regan, Ilia Isorelys Paulino, Morgan Davies, Aidan Scott, Langley Kirkwood, Jeff Ward, Celeste Loots, Alexander Maniatis, McKinley Belcher III, Craig Fairbrass, Steven Ward, and Chioma Umeala also star.
Behind the scenes, the series is in capable hands, with Matt Owens and Steven Maeda serving as writers, executive producers, and showrunners. The brilliant manga creator Oda serves as an executive producer alongside Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements of Tomorrow Studios. One Piece is a collaborative effort with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios in association with Netflix.
While Matt Owens and Steven Maeda spearheaded the live-action One Piece, Eiichiro Oda significantly shaped the show’s creative direction. Oda was consulted on nearly every facet of the production process, as his approval was essential to its success. This included removing any story changes he didn’t like and even reshooting specific scenes based on his recommendations.
The decision to renew the series isn’t surprising. One Piece has dominated Netflix’s top 10 charts over the past two weeks, earning glowing reviews from everyone. Marty Adelstein previously hinted at the scripts being prepared for a second season of One Piece, and Becky Clements further suggested that new episodes could be released in the next year to 18 months.
One Piece Season 2 will cover the Arabasta Saga and, presumably, the Loguetown arc left out of Season 1.
However, while the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes remain ongoing, it won’t be possible to begin production on One Piece season two anytime soon. The unions are demanding better pay and working conditions, as well as increased creative control over their work. The strike has affected the production of several television shows and films, including another hit Netflix series, Stranger Things.
But fans won’t mind the wait since the manga series has left an indelible mark on entertainment. Launched in 1997, the manga’s legacy is defined by its extraordinary popularity, global influence, and cultural impact. With over 480 million copies sold worldwide (as of 2021), One Piece consistently ranks among the best-selling manga series ever.
Its anime adaptation began in 1999 and expanded its reach even further. One Piece has also inspired a vast array of merchandise and video games. Its characters, especially Luffy and Zoro, have become iconic figures in anime and manga. Moreover, Oda’s storytelling and art style have influenced aspiring manga and writers, contributing to the medium’s growth.
