Star Trek Just Resurrected Hemmer, Here’s His Return
Strange New World’s beloved Lieutenant Hemmer has been resurrected in Star Trek: Very Short Treks, and fans can once again get a peek at the Andorian Aenar. Though his resurrection is “very” short-lived in an episode that is only four minutes long, the inclusion of the popular character gives fans something to smile about.
Bruce Horak returns to the role of Hemmer in the most recent episode of Star Trek: Very Short Treks.
Though Lieutenant Hemmer (Bruce Horak) only appeared in six episodes of the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds before giving his life to save his friends, the character won the affection of viewers with his kind and compassionate personality. Hemmer served as Chief Engineer on the USS Enterprise and became a close mentor to Cadet Uhura.
Even though Hemmer died in the live-action series, Star Trek: Very Short Treks writers saw no reason why the character couldn’t be present in the animated series. Very Short Treks is a bounces off of the idea of the Paramount+ series Star Trek: Short Treks. The “short” episodes are around 10 minutes a piece, while the “very” short episodes only run for five minutes or less.
The latest installment in the Star Trek: Very Short Treks series is entitled “Holiday Party” and centers on the celebration of First Contact Day on the Enterprise. Hemmer has been chosen by the captain to emcee a First Contact Day party on the ship.
The “short” episodes are around 10 minutes a piece, while the “very” short episodes only run for five minutes or less.
Given that First Contact Day is a celebration of the first meeting between Humans and Vulcans, Hemmer doesn’t feel qualified for the role, as he is neither Human nor Vulcan. Instead, he passes the role off to Spock who is a little of both species, and Spock proceeds to do his best to present a reel of ship bloopers for the crew’s entertainment.
Hemmer served as Chief Engineer on the USS Enterprise and became a close mentor to Cadet Uhura.
However, Spock isn’t the best at interpreting humor, and his presentation quickly turns a bit dark. His first “blooper” presentation depicts trouble with the transporter. When Hemmer is working to beam up one of the ship’s crew, only half of him gets transported, leaving his entrails spilling out on the floor.
Another clip showed the USS Shenzhou’s point of view in the fall of the USS Europa at the Battle of the Binary Stars where 6,000 lives were lost, and Spock follows up the footage with an “In Memoriam” reel.
Uhura tries to help Spock out a bit by explaining that blooper reels should only depict small accidents. For example, mispronouncing Spock as “spork” or running face-first into a closed door.
Spock finally gets it right with his last clip, showing an ensign with “space diarrhea” hurriedly trying to make it to the bathroom. The ensign trips on a freshly mopped floor and pegged himself in the genitals with the mop handle, which caused him to let out a roaring fart.
