We’re Getting More Justice League Movies
According to inside sources, Warner Bros is apparently developing a new trilogy of animated Justice League films for their streaming service, Max. The collection of films, nicknamed the Tomorrowverse, will be receiving a major influx of installations just as James Gunn prepares to make his first major moves as creative head of the longstanding franchise.
Gunn has specified in the past that his plan for the DCU involves significant crossover between the animated and live-action corners of the franchise, meaning these new Justice League films could hold significant weight for the future of Gunn’s live-action universe.
Warner Bros. is bringing a trilogy of animated Justice League movies in the Tomorrowverse
The current canon of animated DCU films began in 2020 with the Chris Palmer-directed Superman: Man of Tomorrow before expanding into a number of standalone films featuring Justice League alumni such as Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman.
James Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran have since dubbed these films the DC Elseworlds continuity, stressing the importance of animated features within the future of DC’s creative vision, without specifying what changes, if any, will be made to the projects under new Warner Bros management.
The animated trilogy will be Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths
Now, fans have been given their first peak into the future of the Elseworlds canon, with the studio announcing the arrival of a Crisis on Infinite Earths film.
First announced at San Diego Comic-Con, the upcoming Justice League feature will be part of a Crysis trilogy which will see the superpowered team facing off against multiversal foes, akin to recent superhero installments such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The first film in the trilogy is scheduled to premiere on Max sometime in 2024.
If Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths follows the fan-favorite comic book plot line, it could mark one of the largest big-screen DC crossovers to date. The arc, which ran 12 issues throughout 1985 and 1986, sought to streamline the entire expanded DC universe into a single continuity by bringing each of the beloved characters from the many DC-owned comic runs into a single story. This plot line has been adapted in a number of episodes of the CW’s Arrowverse, as well as the recent Ezra Miller Flash film.
This multiverse event may even tie into the upcoming James Gunn-verse by offering a canon explanation for the change in DC leadership. Many fans have been wondering exactly how Gunn plans to clean the slate from the final remaining films of the Snyderverse such as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is set to premier this December and will feature appearances from Justice League alumnus including Ben Affleck, according to IMDb.
For now, most discourse surrounding the future of the DCU is highly speculative, as many details have been kept tightly under wraps by the creative team at Warner Bros. Regardless, DC fans should be elated to learn that a trilogy of Justice League films adapting one of the comic’s greatest plot lines will be coming to fruition soon.
