Jurassic Park Makes Over A Million Dollars In One Weekend
Jurassic Park just made over a million dollars in one weekend. And no, you didn’t somehow miss the release of another Jurassic World film — we’re talking about the O.G. Jurassic Park from 1993. The film was recently re-released in theaters for a special 30th-anniversary celebration for National Cinema Day, and according to Box Office Mojo, the classic dinosaur adventure made nearly $2 million in just five days.
For its thirtieth anniversary re-release, Jurassic Park made $1.8 million at the box office.
It’s been a tough couple of years for the cinema, though it seems like we’re finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Movies like Barbie and Oppenheimer have managed to put butts back in the seats in movie theaters across the nation, and there’s finally hope that maybe not every theater in the country will go bankrupt.
But even Barbie’s $1.3 billion box office feat and Oppenheimer’s remarkable $778.8 million in ticket sales is less impressive than Jurassic Park’s $1.8 million box office earnings.
It’s a rare feat for a film to remain relevant, captivating, and financially viable after three decades. But Jurassic Park seems to have done just that.
It’s been 30 years since the Steven Spielberg masterpiece was released, and still, the original managed to draw people out of their homes and into the theaters to create a sizeable dent in the modern box office landscape.
Jurassic Park re-emerged on over 1,200 screens to mark its 30th year in theaters. It was released in 3D to provide both dedicated fans and newcomers alike with an immersive experience.
As a result, the film climbed its way up to the 13th position among current blockbuster features, outperforming Sound of Freedom, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Little Mermaid, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Elemental.
It’s been 30 years since the Steven Spielberg masterpiece was released and still, the original managed to draw people out of their homes and into the theaters to create a sizeable dent in the modern box office landscape.
While it’s true that some of these contenders have been available to watch in theaters for weeks or even months, Jurassic Park has been out for 30 years and is available to watch at home. That alone says a lot about the legacy Speilberg’s prehistoric adventure has created.
The success of Jurassic Park is far from an isolated incident. Ever since its original release in 1993, the franchise has consistently demonstrated its prowess as a box office juggernaut. The inaugural installment not only secured its place as one of the highest-grossing films of its era but also laid the foundation for a series of sequels that would redefine cinematic expectations.
Jurassic Park’s Sequels
The first Jurassic Park sequel, The Lost World, achieved a groundbreaking milestone by boasting the best opening weekend in history during its time. While the third film, Jurassic Park III, didn’t do as great as the first two, it still brought in a respectable $50 million opening weekend and an overall gross of $400 million.
But the resurgence of the franchise in 2015 with Jurassic World truly captured the glory of the first film, obliterating records and earning its place among the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.
The 30th-anniversary re-release of Jurassic Park stands as a triumphant testament to the enduring legacy of Spielberg’s cinematic classic. Its remarkable box office performance in the face of contemporary competition speaks volumes about the timeless appeal of its narrative, characters, and spectacle.
As the film industry grapples with evolving dynamics and challenges, the success of such re-releases opens doors to a world where classic movies can continue to mesmerize audiences and leave an unforgettable mark on the ever-evolving landscape of cinema.
