The Jenna Ortega Slasher Comedy On Netflix You Need To Watch
The thing about dark comedy slasher films is that it’s rare to find one that will get nominated for an Oscar, but that’s also not the point. These types of movies are usually pretty terrible, but that’s what makes them so fun. So even though The Babysitter: Killer Queen isn’t going to be Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes anytime soon, this Jenna Ortega-led slasher gem is definitely a film you’ll want to add to your watch list.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen Is A Sequel
The dark comedy slasher film The Babysitter: Killer Queen, directed and produced by McG, is a devilish sequel that is currently streaming on Netflix. The tale picks up two years after Cole Johnson’s harrowing encounter with a satanic cult led by his babysitter. Now a few years older, Cole is about to face his demons again in the thrilling sequel starring a dynamic cast including Judah Lewis, Emily Alyn Lind, Jenna Ortega, Robbie Amell, and Bella Thorne.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen follows Cole Johnson (Judah Lewis), now a high school junior, who remains haunted by the night he confronted a satanic cult led by his former babysitter, Bee. Though he struggles to convince anyone of the true nature of those events, his best friend Melanie (Emily Alyn Lind) stands by his side.
When Cole’s parents enroll him in a psychiatric school due to their doubts about his mental state, he escapes with Melanie, her boyfriend Jimmy, and their friends Boom-Boom and Diego to join a lake party, where new student Phoebe Atwell (Jenna Ortega) arrives just in time to witness a series of bizarre and deadly events.
The cast of The Babysitter: Killer Queen brings their characters to life with a mix of humor, horror, and unexpected twists. Judah Lewis shines as Cole, capturing the essence of a tormented teenager who must confront his darkest fears head-on. Emily Alyn Lind’s portrayal of Melanie adds complexity to her character, revealing the sinister motives hidden beneath her friendly facade.
One of the standout performances in the movie comes from Jenna Ortega as Phoebe Atwell, a new student with her own tragic past.
Robbie Amell, Andrew Bachelor, Hana Mae Lee, and Bella Thorne deliver delightfully devilish performances as resurrected cult members, each contributing to the film’s wickedly twisted atmosphere. One of the standout performances in the movie comes from Jenna Ortega as Phoebe Atwell, a new student with her own tragic past.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen marked one of the first films that introduced Jenna Ortega as a rising star. Killer Queen was released following a series of Disney projects Ortega worked on and was the first in a series of horror productions she would act in, including Scream, Studio 666, and X.
Over the next couple of years, Ortega would become known not just as the newest scream queen on the block but she would shoot to superstardom with the release of Wednesday, in which she played the titular character, the iconic Wednesday Addams.
Upon its release, The Babysitter: Killer Queen received a mix of reviews from critics. While some praised its blend of gore and suspense, others found the movie lacking in inspiration and coherence. The film’s distinctive visual style, including its cinematography and gore effects, contributes to its darkly comedic atmosphere. While most critics found the acting from Jenna Ortega and her co-stars to be sufficient, it was clear that the main reason folks were watching Killer Queen was for the campy gore.
A Third Film Could Be On The Way
Despite receiving a generally negative critical reception, The Babysitter: Killer Queen director has teased the possibility of a sequel depending on the success the film received on Netflix. McG says that a third film would complete the series, adding new layers to the Babysitter universe and hopefully offering a satisfying conclusion to the horrors that plague Cole’s life.
Unfortunately, since the film was released on Netflix, there are no clear indications on if the film garnered enough cash to greenlit a third, so we’ll have to wait and see if we’ll see Jenna Ortega and Judah Lewis reunite in this series again.
In The Babysitter: Killer Queen, demonic forces once again clash with the resilience of the human spirit. The film’s plot, talented cast, including Judah Lewis and Jenna Ortega, and distinct visual elements combine to create a sequel that both entertains and challenges its audience. As the series potentially moves toward a thrilling conclusion, it’s clear that the devilish secrets and unexpected twists will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
