Russian Spaceship Crashes On The Moon
A Russian spaceship has left its mark on the moon – literally. ScienceAlert reports that a probe known as the Luna-25 crashed during a pre-landing maneuver with no word on what the cause of the crash was. First reported by the country’s space agency, Roscosmos, on Sunday, the failed expedition marks Russia’s first mission to the moon in nearly five decades.

After losing communications with Luna-25 around 3 p.m. on Saturday, the worst was feared with the discovery of the collision soon to follow. A search for the missing Russian spaceship went into place, with those back at base hoping to still find it in one piece. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be the case, with the failed trek into the unknown marking a dark spot in the country’s space program.
A former researcher with Roscosmos, Valery Yegorov, who is now forced to live in exile, also laid into the fact that the Russian spaceship crash would hit the country’s space program hard. According to him, the next launch on the docket won’t be able to happen until 2028 but could be “even later.”
The Luna-25 was Moscow’s hope of bringing back the glory of its Soviet-era Luna program, hoping that the ship would give the country the push that it needed to get back into space explorations.
With pressure building during their ongoing war with Ukraine, Roscosmos has been pushed back with space exploration falling by the wayside. With the news of the Russian spaceship crashing into the moon, the signs are pointing to only darker days ahead for the country’s cosmic discoveries.

As Yegorov explained, the possible technical problems may stem from ongoing sanctions carried out on Russia by the rest of the world – specifically for the country’s seizing of Crimea.
The War With Ukraine
The sanctions that led to the Russian spaceship crash could also stem from the country’s war with Ukraine with many countries showing their solidarity for Ukraine by means of blocking Russia off from goods and services needed to obtain a higher form of space discovery.
The launch of the Russian spaceship comes at a bizarre time, as Yegorov points out, commenting on how the country has its hands full with the war that it started with Ukraine.
Believing that the people would simply back down and pass its control over and into the hands of the Russian government, the exact opposite has been the case with the country instead forming a tight defensive movement that has turned into an offensive one. With Russia pouring all of its energy into the war, it’s odd that they would choose this time to attempt to flex their space exploration muscles with Luna-25.
As they attempt to throw their name back into the space race, the failed attempt that came from the Russian spaceship shows how underprepared the country is to get back in the game. Over the last 50 years, Russia has poured itself into bolstering itself in a variety of ways but, for now, space exploration has taken a back seat.
