The Last Voyage Of The Demeter Will Make Less Than A 14-Year Old Animated Re-Release
It’s been a big summer for the box office with titles like Oppenheimer and Barbie breaking records while others including The Flash and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny have unexpectedly underperformed. While summer isn’t necessarily the season for horror flicks, titles like Cobweb and The Last Voyage of the Demeter have tried to hold their own. Unfortunately, the latter is currently finding itself crushed by the animated film, Coraline, that came out 14 years ago.
2009’s Coraline is back in theaters, and it’s on track to outperform The Last Voyage of the Demeter at the box office.
Returning to theaters for a two-day event to celebrate its anniversary, Henry Selick’s 2009 stop-motion feature, Coraline completely cleaned up at the box office during its run. In just two days, according to Bloody Disgusting, the title raked in $4.5 million, leading Fathom Events, LAIKA, and Park Circus to make moves to give it a longer run at the end of the month.
With this in mind, the 14-year-old title is likely to surpass The Last Voyage of the Demeter which has just raked in $6.5 million to date.
Arriving in theaters on August 11, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is one of the undersung titles of the summer, undoubtedly being eclipsed by Barbie and Oppenheimer – a fate that has befallen many of this year’s major productions. The film centers around a chapter from Bram Stoker’s legendary tale, Dracula, and tells the story of the titular ship whose crew is doomed by the blood-thirsty vampire lurking in the shadows.
Although The Last Voyage of the Demeter is, at this moment, trailing behind Coraline’s box office sweeping re-release, there’s still plenty of time for the film to catch up.
Directed by André Øvredal, The Last Voyage of the Demeter boasts a talented cast including Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones), David Dastmalchian (The Boogeyman), Corey Hawkins (The Walking Dead), and Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale) with Javier Botet (Insidious: The Last Key, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) playing the grotesque bloodsucker.
On a very different note from The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Selick’s stop motion feature, Coraline, is based on Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name. Technically a children’s movie, the film has dark themes as the titular girl goes on an adventure of self-discovery after stumbling upon an alternate reality.
Like The Last Voyage of the Demeter, Coraline also had an all-star cast with vocal performances from Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane, Keith David, Jennifer Saunders, and Dawn French. The re-release has been given an updated 2023 makeover featuring re-colored animation and a remastered soundtrack.
