Sydney Sweeney Officially Reveals Her Madame Web Character
After months of rumors, we now have confirmation about a major speculation regarding Sony's upcoming Madame Web film.
We’ve known that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney was involved with the upcoming Madame Web movie for a while, and though everyone already assumed she would be playing Spider-Woman in the film, it was never officially confirmed…until now. According to Forbes, the 25-year-old actress recently admitted that her Madame Web character was indeed Julia Carpenter, Marvel’s second iteration of the webbed woman of action.
Madame Web is likely to focus more on Dakota Johnson’s title character, with Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Woman in a more supporting role. For this movie, at least. It’s not a stretch to assume that Madame Web, if successful, will serve as a springboard for a Spider-Woman solo movie.
Now, thanks to Sydney Sweeney’s confirmation that she will be portraying the Julia Carpenter version of Spider-Woman in Madam Web, the possibility of a Spider-centric Avengers-like team-up movie seems even more likely.
But why stop there? Given that Dora the Explorer actress Isabella Merced is listed on IMDb as playing Anya Corazon in the film—AKA the superhero Spider-Girl—Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web could end up being a jumping-off point for several potential franchises in Sony’s Spider-Verse.
Of course, Sony has a nasty habit of putting all its eggs in one basket and then setting said basket on fire and dropkicking it off a cliff, so who knows? It’s been almost a decade since Sony bet all of their hopes and dreams on The Amazing Spider-Man 2, seeding the film with several villains and plot points the studio hoped to turn into its own version of the MCU. We all know how that turned out.
The difference this time around is the unexpected success of the Venom franchise. Venom and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, were surprise hits that made it look like Sony might actually be able to pull off a Spider-Man-themed cinematic universe with no Spider-Man.
Sweeney admitted that when she found out she had the part, she was “freaking out” and ran “straight to the comic store” to purchase every comic she could find featuring Julia Carpenter.
Morbius was… Morbius, unfortunately, but the studio bounced back with their animated hit Across the Spider-Verse, leaving Sony with more movies in the win column this time around than their previous attempt. The real test for the Venom-Verse will be Sydney Sweeney’s Madam Web and Aaron Taylor Johnson’s upcoming Kraven The Hunter.
If Sony can manage to stick the landing with those two movies and the Sydney Sweeney film, it will prove that Venom wasn’t a fluke and their Spider-Man adjacent movie universe can stand on its own. Of course, a cameo from Tom Holland here or there wouldn’t exactly hurt, either.
Meanwhile, with the news that Sony is developing live-action films for both Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen and the Jessica Drew version of Spider-Woman that appeared in Across the Spider-Verse, it sounds like the studio might be slowly working towards a movie starring a team of female Spider heroes.
It’s confirmed that Sydney Sweeney will play Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman, in Madame Web.

Sydney Sweeney, for her part, sounds like she would definitely be game for further adventures as Spider-Woman. Sweeney admitted that when she found out she had the part, she was “freaking out” and ran “straight to the comic store” to purchase every comic she could find featuring Julia Carpenter.
Fans will find out whether Sydney Sweeney’s portrayal of Spider-Woman is strong enough to carry its own film when Madame Web makes its theatrical debut on February 16, 2024.
