Twisted Metal Sets Unbelievable Record On Streaming
If you haven’t binged all ten episodes of Peacock’s newest TV series Twisted Metal, then you are in the minority. Since the show premiered just over two weeks ago (on July 27), it has become the “most-binged” comedy premiere on Peacock thus far, according to Deadline.
Twisted Metal brings a long-dormant gaming franchise back to life, but more impressively, it’s Peacock’s “most-binged” comedy premiere of all time.
The outrageous show is based on the video game of the same name that was first released by Sony back in 1995. The game allowed players to control their own vehicle and destroy the other drivers in the most badass way possible by using guns, missiles, land mines, bombs, and anything else they could find. Players could choose from a variety of characters, such as Sweet Tooth, Mr. Grimm, Roadkill, Axel, and many more.
The new TV show Twisted Metal still offers plenty of violence and destruction but balances it out with humor and an enticing storyline. Anthony Mackie plays John Doe, a loud-mouthed outsider who needs to deliver a mysterious package while battling against other reckless drivers. Things get even more interesting when he picks up a woman, Quiet (played by Stephanie Beatriz), who helps him fight his way through the post-apocalyptic wasteland.
In addition to its ridiculous plot and over-the-top action sequences, Twisted Metal offers an assortment of great characters and actors.
Sweet Tooth, the iconic clown-mask wearing villain of the series, is physically played by AEW wrestler Samoa Joe, but his voice is Arrested Development’s Will Arnett.
Neve Campbell plays Raven, the woman who commissions Anthony Mackie to deliver the mysterious package. Will Arnett and Joe Seanoa (better known as the wrestler Samoa Joe) bring the creepy character Sweet Tooth to life, with the former providing the voice while the latter’s menacing physique dominates the screen, as an ice cream truck driver wearing a demonic clown mask. Thomas Haden Church plays Agent Stone, a former police officer who is trying to bring law and order back into the long-lost world.
Fans can’t get enough of the new Peacock show, and many are binging the whole first season in one viewing. In its first weekend of streaming, Twisted Metal received 400 million viewing minutes, which is an incredible feat. The show is giving other Peacock original shows a run for their money, including Bel Air, The Best Man: Final Chapters, Poker Face, and Based on a True Story.
Considering Twisted Metal was brought to life by the team responsible for Deadpool and Zombieland, it shouldn’t be a surprise that it’s such a hit.
Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the creative minds behind Deadpool and Zombieland, are responsible for bringing the video game adaptation to life and making it as clever and funny as it is. Twisted Metal definitely shares a similar comedic style as their other films, offering up plenty of sarcasm and jokes to help their characters cope with the chaos around them. Michael Jonathan Smith also joined the writing team and worked as the showrunner on the TV series.
After quickly binging all ten episodes of the first season of Twisted Metal, fans are already eager for more. Given the immediate and groundbreaking success of the first season, it seems promising that there will be more to come for the series.
The creative team behind the franchise will have plenty of inspiration to work from since there are several more Twisted Metal video games. The TV series could bring even more characters onto the big screen and create new ones to wreak havoc like never before.
