Andor is one of the most acclaimed entries in the Star Wars canon. The series brought a new level of maturity and groundedness to the space opera, telling a harrowing story of the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. A key player in the show’s maturity was Andy Serkis, who teased Entertainment Weekly that his character, Kino Loy, may return for Season 2 of Andor.

“Well, there weren’t really many discussions about the afterlife of Kino. All that we do know is that he survives. I mean, we don’t see him die. We see him left for a further life of the character.”

When asked if Serkis had discussed reprising the role, the actor said, “Well, there weren’t really many discussions about the afterlife of Kino. All that we do know is that he survives. I mean, we don’t see him die. We see him left for a further life of the character.”

Andy Serkis character made his Andor debut in episode eight, during which Andor is locked in Narkina 5, a prison surrounded entirely by water. While inside, he meets Kino Loy, a fellow prisoner who he eventually convinces to aid in an escape.

Kino incites a riot over the intercom system that allows the breakout. When he sees that the prison is surrounded by water, he utters the show’s most tragic line: “I can’t swim.” Andor escapes, but Kino is left behind.

When Andy Serkis was cast in Andor, many rumors ignited about his role. Serkis previously played Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, though the character was entirely CGI and performed by Serkis in a motion capture suit.

Andy Serkis is right; the audience never sees the true end of Kino, though things probably did not go well for him back in Narkina 5. Still, the door is open for the character to return in Season 2 of Andor, which is set to debut in 2024.

When Andy Serkis was cast in Andor, many rumors ignited about his role. Serkis previously played Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, though the character was entirely CGI and performed by Serkis in a motion capture suit. Fans wondered if Andor might give a glimpse into the origins of Snoke, who remains a mystery in the Star Wars universe.

That does not appear to be the case, though anything is possible. Whether or not Andy Serkis will return at all for Season 2 is still a secret, and fans of the show will not get their answer for another year. Andor is one of the many shows to be delayed by the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes.

That may seem like a long time to wait, but there is plenty of Star Wars set to release before then. The first episode of Ahsoka will drop on Disney+ August 23, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is slated for a late 2023 debut. The High Republic-era series The Acolyte will join Andor on Disney+ in 2024 to explore the galaxy at the Jedi Order’s pinnacle.

Andy Serkis will be back for Andor Season 2 in some capacity after all, we never saw his body and he simply turned around from the water.

If Andy Serkis does return for Andor, he will be a welcome sight for fans, who embraced the actor in his second role in the franchise. The character of Supreme Leader Snoke was ill-fated, as was the trilogy he appeared in. Kino Loy feels like a redemption round for Serkis, who praised the tragic arc of his character as a joy to play.

For Andy Serkis, the story of Kino Loy, and Andor as a whole is one of oppression that resonates deeply with audiences. It is the meaty sort of role actors long for and in the case of blockbuster franchise work, rarely get. Time will tell if Serkis escaped the Star Wars franchise or if Season 2 of Andor will draw him back into its gravity.
