If you were planning on bingeing the television series Scream (based on the iconic horror movies) as part of your spooky agenda this fall, you might want to reconsider your plan and start Halloween a little early this year. Scream Seasons 1 through 3 is leaving the US version of Netflix on September 1, which means your last day to watch this terrifying series is August 31. Unfortunately, the slasher series was already axed from the streaming service’s international catalog last year.

Scream Seasons 1 through 3 is leaving the US version of Netflix on September 1.

Originating as a spin-off from the hit horror movie franchise created by Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven, the Scream TV series first slashed its way onto MTV screens in 2015. Over its three-season run, the series traversed the towns of Lakewood and Atlanta, entwining the lives of its teenage protagonists with a relentless masked serial killer known as Ghostface.

By popular demand, Netflix acquired the thrilling show in 2016 and has reined on the streaming platform for the last seven years.

Scream Seasons 1 and 2 invited viewers to the eerie fictional town of Lakewood following a series of gruesome murders. The central figure in this blood-soaked saga was Emma Duval, portrayed by Willa Fitzgerald. As the harrowing events unfold, Emma finds herself at the heart of a deadly game, uncovering the town’s dark history while evading the clutches of the masked killer.

Switching gears, the third and final season of the Netflix show thrust audiences into the bustling streets of Atlanta, introducing Deion Elliot, a local football star played by RJ Cyler. Haunted by his past, Deion becomes the prey of Ghostface, who stalks Deion, revealing his dark secrets—dimming all hope for a brighter future and putting Deion’s family and friends and deep peril.

Scream TV series

Throughout its haunting tenure on Netflix, the Scream TV series boasted an ensemble cast of both established and rising stars. Faces like Tyga, Tom Maden, Tyler Posey, Keke Palmer, Connor Weil, and John Karna lent their talent to the show’s visceral tales of horror.

Can You Stream Scream Anywhere Else?

As the series departs Netflix in the United States, fans are left wondering where the terrifying tales of Scream will find their new home. Paramount+ seems a natural contender, considering it already houses most of the franchise’s movie entries.

However, the series has struggled to find a streaming sanctuary internationally due to the tangled web of ownership rights involving The Weinstein Co. and Lantern Entertainment.

Like the original Scream movies, the Scream TV series, with its unforgettable characters and heart-pounding suspense, has solidified its place in the pantheon of horror classics. With the departure date scheduled just before the start of fall, horror fans can’t help but wonder if the full saga of Ghostface will be available to stream on a new platform with other Halloween classics or if the series will become a memory of the past once it departs from Netflix’s catalog.

Overall, the Scream series received mixed reviews, even before it was available on Netflix. Critics were split after watching the first season, with some saying that the show relied too heavily on nostalgia for the films, while others felt that the show did a great job of balancing horror, humor, and quippy pop-culture dialog. However, the second season was released to critical acclaim, becoming “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics and audiences alike loving the show.

Scream’s Final Season

Scream Season 3

The final season, which came to Netflix in 2019, was once again released to mixed reviews. While Season 1 of Scream was panned for relying too much on the suspense and not delving deep enough into the characters, critics thought the opposite of Season 3. In the final season, critics felt that the show did much better at creating interesting and diverse characters but fell flat when it came to suspense and thrill.

The Scream TV series, born from the nightmarish imaginations of horror legends Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven, has left a memorable mark on the slasher film genre. The series has taken audiences on a terrifying rollercoaster ride from Lakewood to Atlanta, from blood-soaked secrets to pulse-pounding chases. As it bids adieu to its Netflix home in the United States, the legacy of Scream will continue to haunt the hearts of fans worldwide—hopefully with Ghostface reemerging soon on Paramount+.
