Long in the business of making audiences move and groove, Taylor Swift’s powers are going beyond her fan’s dedication to showering her exes with hate as they’re beginning to be the cause of actual scientific events. According to CNN, the “Shake It Off” singer’s Eras tour stop at Seattle’s Lumen Field stadium logged in seismic activity that was equal to a 2.3 magnitude earthquake. What’s even more crazy is that this shaking lasted for a whopping ten hours – an incredible amount of time for some man-made shakes.

Seismologist and geology professor at Western Washington University (and possible Swiftie?) Jackie Caplan-Auerbach told CNN that she had been accruing data from each night of Taylor Swift’s concerts and saw a similarity between the “signals.” When layered on top of the other, she said the signs were “nearly identical,” sharing that this is part of the magic of the world around us: “Everyday observations and experiences are science.”
Taylor Swift isn’t the first person responsible for causing this type of activity as, back in 2011, a 2.0 magnitude quake was recorded after former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch scored a touchdown that erupted in earthquake-level cheering and applause.
But the main difference between Taylor Swift’s Eras quake and that of Lynch’s big touchdown was the duration. While the cheers and outbursts of excitement from fans were just a few minutes in length, the Swiftie-induced shaking went on for somewhere around ten hours.
When you break down the size of Taylor Swift’s crowds, the idea that a ten-hour-long seismic event took place shouldn’t be that big of a surprise. Not only has the singer been completely packing out the biggest stadiums around the United States but for the thousands who were unable to get tickets, they’ve been pulling up to the arenas to do the next best thing – tailgate.

This isn’t the first time that Taylor Swift has made headlines with her Eras tour as the musician took on Ticketmaster for the company’s unsavory sales policy at the very beginning of the year. A case that would work its way in front of Congress, the “Cardigan” singer was happy to lead the charge against the online ticketing website which unfairly allows bots to drive ticket prices up.
Along with Swift, other performers came forward to slam the company’s fees which see the website getting richer while artists only see a portion of the profits and customers are spending paycheck after paycheck on nosebleed section seats.
As the Swiftie train continues to roll around the globe, breaking record after record, Jackie Caplan-Auerbach says that she’ll have her gear back in hand when Beyoncé comes through with the Renaissance World Tour.
