Julian Sands Cause Of Death Is Complete Mystery
There is still no official cause of death for actor Julian Sands.
British actor Julian Sands’ cause of death has officially been cited as “undetermined,” CNN Entertainment reports. “The cause is undetermined due to the condition of the body and because no other factors were discovered during the coroner’s investigation,” Public Information officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Coroner Department, Mara Rodriguez, said in a statement.
Rodriguez added that an “undetermined” ruling is standard when dealing with deaths of this nature. In June, human remains discovered in the Mount Baldy area were confirmed to belong to Julian Sands, who disappeared during a hike in January. Challenging weather conditions impeded search efforts to locate the actor.

However, the search was renewed in June. During that period, officials reported that more than 80 search and rescue volunteers, deputies, and staff collaborated in the operations with the aid of two helicopters and drone crews. These dedicated volunteers scoured remote regions throughout Mount Baldy to locate Julian Sands.
“We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer,” his family said in a statement after Julian Sands’ body was found. His brother, Nick Sands, also expressed that the tributes in honor of his brother have been incredibly moving.
Julian Sands received his education at Lord Wandsworth College in Hampshire before starting an illustrious acting career. His journey began with roles in notable films such as The Killing Fields, which caught the attention of director James Ivory. His breakthrough came when he landed the part of George Emerson in the 1985 film adaptation of E.M. Forster’s novel, A Room with a View.
The search for Julian Sands lasted six months after his disappearance in January 2023.
A Room with a View, set in Edwardian-era England and Italy, revolved around the blossoming love between Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) and the free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands). The movie also starred acclaimed actors like Dame Maggie Smith, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Dame Judi Dench. The film’s success solidified Julian Sands’ position in the entertainment industry.
His acting prowess continued to shine as he portrayed the English Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in Ken Russell’s psychological thriller, Gothic. After moving to Hollywood, the actor gained recognition for his role as the titular character in the 1989 horror film Warlock and its sequel. Julian Sands also graced the screens in other movies like Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena, and Leaving Las Vegas.
Beyond the big screen, Julian Sands made a significant impact in television, taking on diverse roles, including that of a Russian terrorist in the popular television drama 24 alongside Kiefer Sutherland. Additionally, he portrayed Jor-El, the biological father of Superman, in the hit CW series Smallville. Recently, the 65-year-old actor starred alongside Peter Capaldi in the drama Benediction.
Julian Sands had always shown a passion for outdoor pursuits. In 2018, he shared his love for mountain climbing and emphasized the importance of embracing new adventures as he aged. He recounted a harrowing incident from the early 1990s during a trip to the Andes, where he and three fellow hikers faced a treacherous storm at an altitude above 20,000 feet.
Julian Sands is survived by his wife, writer Evgenia Citkowitz, and their two adult daughters. Before his current marriage, he was wed to Sarah Sands, the former editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today program, with whom he has a son.
