Exclusive: Deadpool 3 Includes X-Men ’97 Animated Sequence
It looks like the MCU is taking a page from the Spider-Verse’s book. Our trusted and proven sources have revealed the upcoming Deadpool 3 will include an animated sequence. Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) will enter the animated world inhabited by the characters of the beloved 1990s cartoon X-Men: The Animated Series.
We’ve exclusively learned Deadpool 3 will include an animated sequence in which Deadpool and Wolverine will enter the cartoon world of X-Men ’97.
This has the potential to answer a big question about Deadpool 3 that most of us have been too excited to ask. It was just last week that it was revealed that for the first time, Hugh Jackman will wear a comic book accurate Wolverine costume in the threequel.
A production photo of Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in costume was released, representing some of the only concrete info we’ve received about the production. While most fans were simply excited to see the image, it raises the question of why Jackman’s Logan — who has never shown anything but disdain for those kinds of costumes — would choose to dress like that.
To be clear, this only speculation and not part of what our sources told us, but if the Deadpool 3 shot above is supposed to take place after Wade and Logan leave the X-Men ’97 world, it would explain why Logan is dressed that way. Otherwise, based on Jackman’s other appearances, you would think he would’ve had to have lost a huge bet to wear that get-up.
The development that Reynolds and Jackman will enter the world of X-Men ’97 makes sense considering what we already know about Deadpool 3. Many of the reports that suggest the heroes will be traveling the Multiverse are so far unconfirmed. These include the rumored involvement of Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson as their Loki characters.
Jennifer Garner‘s return as Elektra, on the other hand, has been confirmed. Garner first played the assassin in 2003’s Daredevil, and then led her own spin-off film. Neither of those features were part of the MCU or Fox’s X-Men narrative, so if nothing else Multiverse Hijinx in Deadpool 3 are guaranteed.
Otherwise, based on Jackman’s other appearances, you would think he would’ve had to have lost a huge bet to wear that get-up.
X-Men: The Animated Series debuted on the Fox Kids Network in 1992 and enjoyed a successful and well-remembered five year run. A sequel series — X-Men ’97 — is on its way to Disney+ with many of the original voice actors returning. There is no firm release date, but at last word it was scheduled to stream later this year.
Merging Animation And Live-Action
With this news about Deadpool 3, the technique of representing the multiverse by mashing together animated and live-action worlds is becoming more common. As anyone who has seen this year’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse no doubt remembers, the filmmakers merged the animated world of Miles Morales with the live-action worlds of other Sony films a number of times.
Shots from both the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield led Spidey films were used, Donald Glover (Atlanta) shows up as a live-action version of the Prowler, and The Spot (Jason Schwartzman) gets to gab with Mrs. Chen (Peggy Lu) from Venom.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to hit theaters next summer — May 3, 2024.
