The Worst Game Of The Year Is On Nintendo Switch
Wouldn’t it be nice if the gaming industry had its own Razzies where the gaming community gets to officially announce the worst game of the year? To be entirely honest, the number of contenders for the hypothetical awards grows by the year, and just when we thought that things couldn’t get any worse than Lord of the Rings: Gollum in 2023, but then someone released The Last Hope on Nintendo Switch—a gaming title now being hailed as the worst game of the year.
A blatant The Last of Us clone, The Last Hope, is now on Nintendo Switch.
According to Kotaku, The Last Hope is actually a pretty poor clone of The Last of Us, and the game is much worse than it was initially thought of. Not only does it look like a blatant copy of the aforementioned Game of the Year gaming title, but it doesn’t feel even remotely like a good copy—because, let’s admit, there are some good rip-offs in gaming, like Fortnite (PUBG), Forza series (Gran Turismo), and Bayonetta (Devil May Cry).
What’s even worse, the game is only about 20 minutes long, and the entirety of its short narrative takes place in one street, making it the worse Nintendo Switch game ever and, quite possibly, the worst game of 2023.
One shouldn’t discard “static” narratives—and by that, we mean stories that take place in one place or a constricted place—because they can be quite awesome. 2004’s Prince of Persia: Warrior Within took great advantage of backtracking and made a whole politically-incorrect narrative take place inside a single fortress.
The worst game of 2023 is apparently marred with performance issues as well, leading us to question just how anyone managed to launch such a short game filled with technical issues on Nintendo Switch.
2007’s The Man from Earth film, whose narrative will make you watch it two times in a row, is fit almost entirely in a single living room. But the same can’t be said for The Last Hope because the quality of the overall game and narrative fits its denotation as the worst game.
On top of poor and short narrative and blatant plagiarism, the worst game of 2023 is apparently marred with performance issues as well, leading us to question just how anyone managed to launch such a short game filled with technical issues on Nintendo Switch, given the platform’s stringent publication rules and regulations.
As reported by Kotaku, everything about the game feels horrible, as if it was never playtested at all, and most of the time, you don’t even know if you’re being attacked or not since there isn’t any indication.
It seems that someone just bought engine assets without putting much thought into the whole creation process, dumped everything into the pot, turned the heat to maximum, and published whatever boiled over.
This horrible gaming experience is, unfortunately, indicative that the indie gaming genre isn’t always filled with underrated gems; it’s often quite the contrary, with many games being lost to time before they even manage to get the attention of the masses, like The Last Hope, the worst game of 2023, does now.
We can only assume that the number of downloads associated with this game is going to grow following the publication of this report because there isn’t such thing as bad publicity, and there are always curious individuals thinking that stuff can’t really be that bad.
Take our word for it: it’s bad, so save the $10 you would spend on the worst game of 2023 for the next Steam sale or something better on Nintendo eShop.
