Will There Be Another Friday The 13th Movie?
While there won't be another Friday the 13th movie, there are plans for a prequel series Crystal Lake
Is Jason Voorhees coming back from the dead… again? After 2009’s Friday the 13th reboot failed to kick off a continuation of the franchise, there is new hope that the beloved slasher movies will come back to the big screen.
The reason we haven’t seen a new Friday the 13th movie in 14 years has been due to legal issues. Victor Miller, the screenwriter of the original movie, was in a complicated lawsuit battle with the director of the original movie, Sean S. Cunningham, and his production company. In 2021, the lawsuit came to an end, with Victor Miller getting the domestic rights to the Friday the 13th franchise.
Now that he has the rights to do so, Victor Miller is creating a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake.
After a Victor Miller settled a lawsuit, he is creating a Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake.
Victor Miller will serve as executive producer along with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24, while Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) will write the show. Additionally, Kevin Williamson (Scream) will guest write one episode. So far, the only cast member to be revealed is Adrienne King who played Alice, the final girl in the first Friday the 13th.
With such an impressive creative team, Crystal Lake is sure to be entertaining and likely scary as hell. The new TV show will be a prequel to the original film from 1980, and it will also focus on the doomed camp counselors. It’s unclear who will be the killer in the new show: a young Jason Voorhees, his psychotic mother, or someone new?
The one confirmation for the cast of Crystal Lake is Adrienne King who played Alice, the final girl in the first Friday the 13th
The last time we saw Jason was in 2009’s Friday the 13th reboot where he was supposedly killed when Whitney (Amanda Righetti) stabbed him in the chest with his own machete. But could that really be enough to stop the indestructible Jason Voorhees?
Throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason has been “killed” in a myriad of ways, from drowning, an axe to the head, getting beaten to death, and even being blown to bits by the FBI in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. And yet, he somehow always comes back.
Jason’s inability to die makes him the perfect villain, and also the perfect franchise star, because Victor Miller can just keep cranking out movie after movie with Jason as the lead. Since there are already 12 Friday the 13th movies in the franchise (including Freddy Vs. Jason), it only makes sense that they would create at least one more to make it a perfect 13.
The prequel TV series is set to be released on Peacock in 2024, and it could set the franchise up for another film. After all, there are endless summer camps just waiting to be terrorized by Jason. But who would play the machete-wielding undead monster?
Unlike Robert Englund who played Freddy Kreuger in eight of the nine Nightmare on Elm Street films, there have been a variety of actors that have donned the infamous hockey mask to play Jason. Over the years, there were at least nine different actors who played Jason, including Ari Lehman, Richard Brooker, and Tom Morga. Most recently, Derek Mears played Jason in the 2009 reboot.
The best-known actor to play Jason was Kane Hodder. He portrayed the villain in four different films, from Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood to Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Kane is currently 68 years old though, so it’s unlikely that he will reprise his role.
Since Jason’s face is hidden behind a mask and he doesn’t speak, it’s easy for any tall, broad-shouldered man to reprise the role. The real trick is figuring out how to bring him back to life.
In Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, which is hailed as the best film in the franchise by many, Jason is brought back to life when a bolt of lightning strikes a metal pole that was impaled in his chest. If Jason is going to come back to life in a new film, we trust that the creative minds behind the project could think of a clever, modern way to bring him back to life—perhaps with a new technology or AI software?
Now that Victor Miller has the rights to the Friday the 13th franchise, it only makes sense that he will keep the slasher movies going, much like Scream, Halloween, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If the movies keep coming, then the die-hard fans will keep watch-ch-ch-ah-ah-ahing.
