Exclusive: Aubrey Plaza Attached To Netflix Sci-Fi Series The Digital Age, Plot Revealed
April from Parks & Rec is fighting for the future! Our trusted and proven sources tell us Aubrey Plaza has signed on to star in the upcoming Netflix series The Digital Age. The show will be directed by Marvel’s Ant-Man filmmaker, Peyton Reed.
We’ve exclusively learned Aubrey Plaza will star in The Digital Age, a sci-fi thriller series directed by Peyton Reed.
According to the information we’ve received, Aubrey Plaza’s upcoming series is a sci-fi thriller set in a future where technology dominates every aspect of life. Her character uncovers a dark conspiracy that threatens to control humanity, forcing her to fight against powerful forces and reclaim individual freedom.
Aubrey Plaza’s Recent Work
On one hand, The Digital Age sounds like a departure for Aubrey Plaza, but on the other hand taking a look at her last few years’ of work reveals the Parks & Recreation alum has proven to be pretty fearless when it comes to exploring new acting territory.
Between completed and upcoming projects either released or announced in the last few years, Aubrey Plaza led the crime thriller Emily the Criminal, appeared in the comedy series The White Lotus, starred in Guy Ritchie’s spy action comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and joined Alison Brie for the dark comedy Spin Me Round.
On the way we’ll be seeing Aubrey Plaza play the personification of Death in Disney+‘s Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Francis Ford Coppola’s ensemble epic Megalopolis, which has been described as “Julius Caesar meets Blade Runner.”
A Departure For Peyton Reed
Aubrey Plaza’s casting in something like The Digital Age doesn’t sound quite as much like a departure as Peyton Reed’s involvement does. It’s far too early tell, but the logline makes the series sound like a dystopian tale along the lines of Blade Runner or Minority Report, and that isn’t a particular muscle we’ve seen Reed flex.
While Reed’s work both on the Ant-Man films and Season 2 of The Mandalorian gives him plenty of experience in science fiction, the Disney worlds of Din Djarin and Scott Lang are nothing like those of Tom Cruise’s John Anderton or Harrison Ford’s Deckard.
Reed’s experience both on the big and small screens is mainly in comedy, and between that and the casting of Aubrey Plaza, it’s tempting to speculate The Digital Age will be infused with more humor than we expect; perhaps something more along the lines of Free Guy, Idiocracy, or even Demolition Man.
At this point, of course, we can only speculate. Once we know more about Aubrey Plaza’s upcoming Netflix series, we’ll make sure you know.
