Square Enix Reviving More Classic RPGs?
It’s no secret that old games were simply better; the Sixth Generation of home video game consoles had some of the best games ever made. Of course, we’re not neglecting newer or older releases; instead, we’re just saying that they don’t make them as they used to. It would seem that Square Enix agrees with the previous statement, as recent reports suggest that the company is considering reviving more of its classic RPG titles.
Unconfirmed reports suggest Square Enix is considering remaking more classic RPG titles.
It would seem that the era of pointless innovation at Square Enix is coming to an end; the company just recently released the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, which contains the first six Final Fantasy games, to incredible success.
It would also seem that the success of its greatest hits across multiple platforms has encouraged Square Enix to consider reviving some of its long-deceased gaming franchises. This includes a variety of titles from the company’s catalog of PlayStation classics, such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Xenogears, and perhaps even Vagrant Story—as reported by Kotaku.
The news stemmed directly from the Square Enix business meeting with the shareholder; the company was asked whether there are any plans to remaster other past titles, with one of the shareholders stating that they would personally like to play Xenogears.
There’s a continuous swirl of rumors surrounding games such as Final Fantasy IX and FF Tactics, especially since those titles were listed in the massive Nvidia leak—which was correct about everything thus far.
Of course, Square Enix hasn’t confirmed anything, stating that the company would refrain from sharing information about new (or remastered) titles but that several ideas are considered within the company. They could be referring to the Final Fantasy VI remake as a full-blown 3D game.
However, it’s important to take all the information listed with a grain of salt. Square Enix hasn’t made any announcement regarding the full restructuring of Final Fantasy VI or about any of the aforementioned oldies-but-goldies.
The company isn’t telling us anything yet, but the questions asked by the shareholders regarding classic titles aren’t without reason. Square Enix already gave Chrono Chross and Tactics Ogre their respective high-definition remakes/ports, so the remasters of other gaming titles we mentioned above aren’t so far-fetched after all.
It might just be a matter of time, especially given the current state of the gaming industry, the fact that the giants are fighting a battle against AI—with Steam banning games left and right—and all new gaming releases being subpar compared to classics from nearly 30 years ago, when games were actually fun to play.
Square Enix Games Ripe For A Remake
We’d actually like to see Xenogears and Vagrant Story remade, but why not toss in a bunch of other classics in the mix as well, like Parasite Eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Threads of Fate from PlayStation’s overwhelming classics library?
And why limit the re-releases to the PlayStation platform alone? The recent shifts in power across the gaming industry clearly show that the time of exclusives is coming to an end and that there’s plenty of earning potential in multi-platform releases.
