Fan-Favorite Canceled DC Series Being Saved By James Gunn
Doom Patrol fans can rejoice! DC guru James Gunn just announced that Doom Patrol Season 4: Volume 2 will be released—though he’s not sure when.
Given that part one of the quirky DC series’ final season ended in January and the release date for part 2 had yet to be announced, fans were understandably worried that Warner had shelved the remaining episodes much like they did with Batgirl and the Scoob sequel. Luckily as reported by CBR, Gunn came forward yesterday and set everyone’s minds at ease.
James Gunn confirms that the second half of Doom Patrol‘s fourth and final season will be released.
Taking to Mark Zuckerberg’s new Twitter alternative, Threads, James Gunn announced that final episodes of Doom Patrol would see an eventual release. Co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn initially responded to a fan’s inquiry about the fate of the Doom Patrol‘s final season by admitting that while he was too busy with Superman: Legacy and Creature Commandos to focus on “day to day TV scheduling,” he couldn’t “imagine a world” where finished television episodes wouldn’t be released.
When the company bought the Star Wars franchise in 2012, it received 39 completed episodes of a humorous animated Star Wars parody from the creators of Robot Chicken titled Star Wars: Detours and promptly locked them in a vault somewhere.
Gunn followed up his first response with concrete confirmation that the last batch of Doom Patrol episodes was “absolutely NOT being shelved,” although he wasn’t yet sure when exactly they would air.
Despite Gunn’s claim that he couldn’t fathom a world where completed episodes of Doom Patrol were scrapped, it actually happens all the time—and in this world, to boot. Take the Clerks animated series, for example. Six episodes of the 2000 primetime cartoon were produced, but Disney-owned ABC only aired two episodes before canceling it altogether.
Granted, the remaining episodes eventually did see the light of day thanks to a DVD release, but it doesn’t change the fact that initially, the episodes were shelved.
That’s not the worst example from Disney. When the company bought the Star Wars franchise in 2012, it received 39 completed episodes of a humorous animated Star Wars parody from the creators of Robot Chicken titled Star Wars: Detours and promptly locked them in a vault somewhere. To this day, not one episode of the almost 40 that were produced has been released to the public.
Add to that all the projects Warner Bros. has axed, shelved, or removed from streaming since its merger with Discovery, and it’s no wonder fans were worried that they may never see the final Doom Patrol episodes.
Luckily for fans of the series, it looks like Robot Man, Cyborg, Negative Man, Crazy Jane, and the rest won’t end up confined to an abandoned hard drive in a Warner Bros. storage closet somewhere. This is good because, according to Jovian Wade, who plays Cyborg, the last few episodes make up “A great finish!”
Luckily for fans of the series, it looks like Robot Man, Cyborg, Negative Man, Crazy Jane, and the rest won’t end up confined to an abandoned hard drive in a Warner Bros. storage closet somewhere.
Wade was just as worried as the fans when it came to the future of Doom Patrol Season 4, Volume 2, saying publicly how much it upsets him when shows “don’t get the opportunity to close the chapter” and allow fans to feel as though they’ve “been a part of something that they came full circle with.” We’re sure the show’s loyal fans feel the same way.
While it’s not the same as releasing Batgirl, or bringing back Henry Cavill, by promising to release the remaining Doom Patrol episodes, Warner Bros. is at least making an effort to get back in the good graces of the DC fandom.
