Henry Cavill’s Superman Replacement Cast Along With New Lois And Lex?
Online rumors point to David Corenswet replacing Henry Cavill as Superman, Emma Mackey as Lois Lane, and Bill Skarsgard as Lex Luthor.
With the depressing news that Man of Steel star Henry Cavill would no longer be suiting up as Superman, fans began to endlessly speculate about who would replace him in James Gunn’s all-new DCU. Similarly, fans were curious about who would be stepping into the iconic shoes of Superman’s various friends and enemies, and now it looks like we might have an answer to all those questions. According to this tweet, rumors strongly point to Superman being played by David Corenswet, Lois Lane being played by Emma Mackey, and Lex Luthor being played by Bill Skarsgard.
While the casting of a new Superman has been getting the most buzz (after all, Henry Cavill left some big, red boots to fill), we are most excited about the possibility of Bill Skarsgard playing Lex Luthor. In retrospect, Jesse Eisenberg was weird casting for Luthor in the DCEU, playing the character as less of a ruthless executive and more like an unhinged Mark Zuckerberg.
By contrast, Skarsgard has built an entire career on his ability to project menace with a single look, which is what you need for a character that is undoubtedly Superman’s ultimate foe.
Since he might be directly replacing Henry Cavill in the DCU, fans have been debating whether David Corenswet has what it takes to be both the bumbling Clark Kent and the larger-than-life Superman. The actor impressed us in the Ti West horror film Pearl, and at 29 years old he’s the right age for a role that will demand, at minimum, the next decade of his life.
Plus, as some fans pointed out on Twitter, he visually looks like a combination of both Henry Cavill and Tom Welling, two of the best actors to ever fight onscreen for truth, justice, and the American way.
Henry Cavill’s Superman would have been nothing without Amy Adams’ Lois Lane, so we are particularly intrigued that Emma Mackey might play the plucky reporter who becomes the love interest of the most powerful man on the planet. Mackey certainly knows her way around relationships: she is perhaps best known for her role in the show Sex Education, and her Hollywood star will likely rise even higher after audiences see her in the upcoming Barbie film.
Of all the Superman characters, Lois Lane has probably changed the most across her onscreen appearances, so it will be interesting to see what Mackey can bring to the table.
Ultimately, this is still just a casting rumor, but if it ends up being true, we’re more excited for Superman: Legacy than ever before. Since their film is meant to kick off James Gunn’s new DCU, these three will have to do more than replace Henry Cavill and crew, they will also have to win back the confidence of audiences that rejected films like Black Adam and The Flash in a big way. If they can’t do that, then filmgoers might have to experience a world without Superman (the eternal dream of Lex Luthor) for a good, long time.
