Robert Downey Jr. Is Giving Away A Fleet Of Dream Cars For Free
Fans can enter a sweepstakes to win one of the cars featured on Downey's Dream Cars.
From the very first Iron Man movie, we knew that Tony Stark, the character perfectly brought to life by Robert Downey Jr., was really into cars: he has a garage where he endlessly tinkers with them before he gets a certain new bit of tech to focus on. As it turns out, this is something Stark and Downey, Jr. have in common, which is one reason that the actor is starring in Downey’s Dream Cars on Max. As reported by ComicBook.com, this series focuses on the actor converting classic American cars into electric vehicles, and fans can enter sweepstakes for a chance to win one.
There are six episodes of the show’s first season, and fittingly enough, the show features Robert Downey Jr. working on converting six different cars into electric vehicles. The cars include an 1985 Chevrolet El Camino, a 1966 Buick Riviera, a 1972 VW Bus, a 1972 Chevrolet K10 Pickup, and a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE.
A standout vehicle is the 1965 Chevrolet Corvette, of which Downey insists “We changed the heart of an American classic, but we left the soul intact.”
Obviously, the idea of winning an electric version of one of these cars is pretty damn cool, but fans should be aware that the sweepstakes is not free to enter. Once fans visit RDJDreamCars.com, those who live in the United States or Canada (with the exception of Quebec) can buy tickets “ranging from 10 entries for $10 to 8,500 entries for $5,000.”
In case you’re wondering, though, none of this money goes to Robert Downey Jr…instead, he is using it to raise money for what he sees as a good cause.
Specifically, all of the money Robert Downey Jr. helps raise via the sweepstakes goes to a group he created called the FootPrint Coalition. This group was created “to accelerate technologies that will help create a future of sustainable abundance,” and it “supports the research, development, and adoption of scientific solutions to ensure human and planetary health.”
Getting more people to buy electric vehicles is a great way to create a more sustainable future, and this show largely exists to show off how cool EVs can really be.
Whether the first season of Downey’s Dream Cars is a hit or not, it sounds like we probably shouldn’t expect another season to happen. Robert Downey Jr. has already indicated that he likely wouldn’t be able to appear in any subsequent seasons, but he is still excited about the show because it provides a tangible way to accomplish the coalition’s goals.
As a popular and charismatic actor, his headlining a popular show about electric vehicles and then giving them away to winners of ambitious sweepstakes may really be the best way to get fans hyped up to drive an electric car.
Incidentally, in case you were worried about Robert Downey Jr. only focusing on reality television, you shouldn’t be. He is going to appear in the highly-anticipated Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer next month, and he’s going to be starring in the show The Sympathizer even as he works on the next Sherlock Holmes film.
In this way, you could say that the actor who hasn’t appeared in a major film since 2020 is coming back quicker than Thanos can snap his fingers.
