Tom Cruise Is About To Break His Own Mission: Impossible Box Office Record
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One is expected to have the biggest box office premiere in the franchise.
In the summer blockbuster season, there are always winners and losers. For example, there’s a tepid premiere like The Flash for every explosive premiere like Across the Spider-Verse. But it looks like Tom Cruise doesn’t have to worry about the box office: according to The Hollywood Reporter, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One is on track to earn $90 million in the first five days, which will make it the biggest premiere in the history of the franchise.
There are a few possible reasons that audiences are so hyped to see Tom Cruise return to the world of action spy thrillers in the next Mission: Impossible film. One is that Top Gun: Maverick actually lived up to its hype. It became a critical and commercial darling that some people (including Steven Spielberg) credit with saving the theatrical experience.
If nothing else, that film proved that the aging Cruise still knows how to give the kind of captivating performance that his fans have come to expect, and fans of that movie are hoping his return to playing Ethan Hunt in the next Mission: Impossible will be equally thrilling.
Another reason to look forward to Tom Cruise kicking ass in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is that the previous film, Fallout, was a series highlight. Adding Henry Cavill to the mix in that film as an antagonistic CIA officer gave Cruise someone with immense onscreen chemistry that he could bounce off of. Their scenes together were electric, and it’s tough not to giggle like a maniac when you first see Henry Cavill reloading his biceps during the iconic bathroom fight.
Additionally, even though we’re sure that Tom Cruise returning to Mission: Impossible would be a big audience draw anyway, we can’t help but feel that Dead Reckoning is getting a boost because of the lack of James Bond films on the horizon.
Now that Daniel Craig has stepped down from being a globetrotting superspy so he can focus on that insane accent in Knives Out films, there has been no official announcement for replacement actors or upcoming films. So for audiences who like the occasional over-the-top spy movie as part of their cinematic diet, this latest Mission: Impossible may be the only big name in town.
Finally, even if you’re not a fan of Tom Cruise, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One has plenty of other beloved actors. In addition to returning faces like Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg, the movie will feature fan-favorite Marvel veteran Hayley Atwell.
Previous footage showed an exciting scene of her and Cruise being handcuffed together and evading the police, so it sounds like their onscreen characters will have an (ahem) close relationship throughout the film.
As you can probably tell by now, we’re big fans of Tom Cruise, and we’re going to be there on opening night when Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One premieres on July 12. Under the direction of Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie, we’re confident that this summer blockbuster is going to seriously deliver at the box office.
This is opposed to tentpoles like The Flash which only seem to be emulating Cruise in a specific way: like his Top Gun character, that movie has hopped into the Batwing and is flying “right into the danger zone” at the box office.
