Exclusive: Strange New Worlds Movie In Development
We've learned a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds movie is in development at Paramount+
Captain Pike is getting his own movie! Our trusted and proven sources have informed us that a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds movie is currently in development at Paramount+. Presumably, the feature will initially be released exclusively on the streaming service, just like the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31.
What we don’t know — and what would doubtless be of concern to fans — is whether or not the work on a Strange New Worlds movie means the series itself is coming to an end. Historically speaking, Paramount has only given its Trek series’ casts the cinematic treatment after their series concluded. That was the case with The Original Series and The Next Generation.
Even the upcoming Section 31 film, which is a spinoff of Discovery, will likely only be released after Discovery‘s fifth and final season concludes.
There are good reasons to believe that isn’t the case with the Strange New Worlds movie, however. Back in April, The Hollywood Reporter published a story saying that Section 31 was going to be the first of what Alex Kurtzman and others at Paramount were calling “Star Trek Phase 2.” THR said their sources claimed Kurtzman wants to release a new Trek feature on Paramount+ every two years.
It looks like the Strange New Worlds movie will be the first to follow Section 31. If THR’s report is accurate, then that gives us a rough possible estimate for when we can see Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Rebecca Romijn, and the rest of the Strange New Worlds crew in their own feature. The earliest Section 31 could stream is 2024, meaning — assuming Kurtzman and co. stick to their schedule — the earliest we could expect a Strange New Worlds movie is 2026.
It makes sense that Strange New Worlds would be the show Kurtzman wants to mine for a streaming movie. The newest Trek series is currently one of Paramount+’s flagship shows. Not to mention that with Star Trek: Picard having concluded, Discovery ending next year, and the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy not scheduled to stream until 2025, soon Strange New Worlds will be Paramount’s only remaining live-action series.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just premiered its second season last week, with the second episode of the new season streaming Thursday morning. The acclaimed series stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Ethan Pike as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley. The series spun out of Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery, in which Pike temporarily takes over the eponymous ship.
