Deadpool 3 Is Releasing A Lot Sooner Than Expected
Deadpool 3 has been moved up from its original November 8, 2024 release to May 3, 2024.
This year has been highly tumultuous for film studios, with the Writers Guild of America striking since the beginning of May, corporate mergers causing services such as HBO Max to shut down and rebrand under new names with new streaming titles, and Disney seemingly juggling a number of changes regarding their Star Wars and Marvel slates. According to a recent write-up in Variety, Disney has made a number of major structural changes to their upcoming release schedule, including pushing Deadpool 3 from its original release date of November 8, 2024, up to May 3, 2024.
While the new Deadpool 3 release date may still feel like an eternity away for many of Marvel‘s biggest fans, this news should come as a major shock considering many of the other affected properties have been pushed back by a number of years. For instance, the remaining installments of James Cameron’s Avatar film series have been pushed back a year each, with the fifth and final planned film projected to land in theaters as late as 2031. Other major changes include an added film to the Star Wars franchise and a live-action Moana remake, which is expected to arrive by June 2025.
While there’s no word yet on how the ongoing WGA strike will impact the newly announced films, Deadpool 3 has already been written and has even begun active production filming in London. The film, which serves as the iconic character’s first entrant into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stars Ryan Reynolds as the famed Merc with the Mouth, as well as Morena Baccarin, Karan Soni, and Brianna Hildebrand in returning roles, and the fans are looking forward to seeing Hugh Jackman, reprising his role as Wolverine.
Newcomers to the film series set to arrive in Deadpool 3 include Succession‘s Matthew Macfadyen, as well as rumored appearances from MCU alumnus Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson, continuing their paths from where they left off in Loki on Disney+. The second season of Loki is set to arrive in October of this year, leaving the duo’s fate completely unknown for the start of their alleged Deadpool outing. Of course, very little is known at this time regarding the Marvel tie-ins of the film, with fans constantly taking to the web with predictions and guesses of how Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine may interact with MCU mainstays.
Long before the announcement of Deadpool 3‘s new release date, franchise star Ryan Reynolds promoted the film via a series of comedically inclined clips posted to YouTube, in which Hugh Jackman dryly agrees to appear in the film as a personal favor. The videos inspired a great deal of fanfare, though many fans found themselves frustrated regarding the ever-distant release date of the film. Hopefully, the news from Disney that Deadpool 3 is now less than a year from finally being realized should quell the ongoing riots, bringing peace to the ravenous comic book fanbase.
Deadpool 3 will also serve as the very first R-rated film in the pantheon of the MCU, though the honor of the very first Marvel “F-bomb” goes to Chris Pratt in the recent Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3. With previous installments of the Deadpool film series including a number of curse words, violence, and adult sexual themes, it’s tough to say just how far Disney will let the team behind the film go now that the property is being absorbed into the same franchise that brought us She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
