Netflix Just Released Its Weirdest Movie Yet And It’s Doing Incredible
Psychological thriller Tin & Tina is currently in Netflix's Top Ten.
Netflix isn’t one to shy away from releasing a varied range of original content and get a little weird, and its recently released original film Tin & Tina might be one of the weirdest films yet. Despite that, the film is tearing up the streaming charts, and FlixPatrol reports that it’s the in the Top Ten movies on Netflix right now. If you’re down for some creepy twin horror, ala The Shining, then this film might be the one to watch tonight.
While Tin & Tina is about a very creepy pair of twins, forewarning that The Shining comparisons end there. Unlike the Stanley Kubrick masterpiece, this odd horror is getting ripped up by reviewers. Right now, the critic score for the film on Rotten Tomatoes is 43 percent, and the audience score is even more abysmal, sitting at 19 percent.
So, with the caveat that the film could very well be a waste of your time, Tin & Tina is a psychological horror set in early 1980s Spain, where a young couple adopts a pair of twins from a convent after a traumatic miscarriage. However, the twins’ obsession with their strict religious teachings soon leads to some disturbing happenings. The film stars Milena Smit, Jamie Lorente, Carlos Gonzalez, Anastasia Russo, Teresa Rabal, Ruth Gabriel, Chelo Vivares, and Luiz Perezagua.
If you’ve heard the name Tin & Tina before, then you might be familiar with the 2013 short film of the same name, which was directed by Rubin Stein. Rubin Stein returns to write and direct the feature-length adaptation of the film with Olmo Figueredo Gonzalez-Quevedo on board as producer. The production companies for the film include La Claqueta PC and Tin & Tina La Película AIE, alongside Miami Film Gate and Andarams Films.
It’s possible that Tin & Tina could have climbed higher on the Netflix Top Ten list, but it had the unfortunate timing of being released around the same time as another new Netflix original film titled The Mother. The Mother is a much bigger draw since it stars Jennifer Lopez. Also, it has a plot more compelling to the general population, with J Lo starring as a former assassin who comes out of hiding to protect her daughter.
The Mother also has a more recognizable cast, which includes Joseph Fiennes, Omari Hardwick, Gael García Bernal, Paul Raci, Lucy Paez, Fahim Fazli, Michael Karl Richards, Saif Mohsen, Yvonne Senat Jones. It seems unlikely that Tin & Tina will overtake it on the Top Ten list, but you never know. In the meantime, it’s also currently getting beat out by a Danish Netflix original film titled A Beautiful Life, which follows a younger fisherman who gets discovered by a music producer for his hidden musical talents.
Still, it’s pretty impressive that Tin & Tina was able to climb up the charts like this when there was pretty much no information about it, and it doesn’t have a ton of big names in the cast. Sitting in the Netflix Top Ten is pretty respectable, and there’s always the chance that it could climb even higher. Especially if there’s enough word of mouth about it.
Unfortunately, though, the word of mouth for the film seems pretty bad at the moment. Maybe more people will discover they like it in the coming weeks, but right now, the reviews are saying that Tin & Tina isn’t the best way to spend a movie night. Still, if you like creepy twin horror, it might be a good choice for you.
Truth be told, a lot of the movies on the Top Ten list are probably going to be knocked down a spot soon, as Extraction 2 is set to release on the platform next week. Even if Tin & Tina was getting rave reviews, it’s going to be hard to beat a Chris Hemsworth action sequel that is sure to have plenty of must-see fight sequences. The previous film did great on the Netflix charts, and there’s no reason to think that Extraction 2 is going to be any different in that respect.
Still, seeing if Tin & Tina gets more attention will be interesting. It’s certainly not your typical Netflix original movie, and it’s good to see the platform taking risks with its content. Even if those risks don’t necessarily always pay off.
