Exclusive: Evan Peters Cast In Tron 3
We've learned that Evan Peters will be starring in Tron 3, aka Tron: Ares, in a major role.
Update: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive was confirmed, and Evan Peters was cast in Tron: Ares as Julian Dillinger.
He may never play Quicksilver again, but that doesn’t mean his time speeding through sci-fi action films is over. Our trusted and proven sources tell us that Evan Peters has been cast in Tron 3, aka Tron: Ares, which will star Jared Leto (Morbius) as the lead. We don’t know who Peters will play, but it’s described as a “major” role.
The news that Evan Peters has been added to the cast of Tron: Ares is the first major news to come out of the production since Deadline reported in January that Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is helming the film. The screenplay is written by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family). At the time the outlet also confirmed the sequel was scheduled for an August filming start date in Vancouver.
So far, Evan Peters is now the only cast member we know will appear in Tron: Ares other than Leto. As a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, it could deliver appearances from stars of that film such as Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, and Cillian Murphy, but none have been confirmed in the movie. No doubt fans will at the very least be hoping for a return from Bridges, who plays the main hero in the movie that begins the series — 1982’s Tron.
As for any educated guesses about who Evan Peters is playing in Tron: Ares, pickings are a little slim as far as what we know about the sequel. Back in February we exclusively reported on some intriguing character details about Tron: Ares. But none of what we learned would specifically point to Peters; in fact, the one male character we learned about is a soldier program named Canus who is described as “older,” which wouldn’t really fit with the 36 year old Peters.
One possible role for Evan Peters that stands out, considering the production timetable of Tron: Ares, is that he could be replacing Cillian Murphy, who makes an uncredited appearance as Edward Dillinger, Jr. in Tron: Legacy. As the lead of Oppenheimer — which hits theaters in July — Murphy could very well still be promoting his historical epic when Tron 3 production begins the following month. Not to mention that Murphy could’ve proven to be a much harder hire now that he’s been promoted from having a supporting role in just about every single Christopher Nolan-helmed film to leading one.
Whoever Evan Peters is playing in Tron: Ares, whenever we know, we’ll make sure you know.
