Sasha Calle Wants To Be Part Of James Gunn’s DCU

The upcoming Ezra Miller-led The Flash is set to arrive in theaters next week, and with it, the inevitable reboot of the DCU into the new era of James Gunn-helmed heroes. With many fans and DCU actors alike concerned about the future of the franchise, their characters, and whether or not a full reboot means recasting every hero in the known universe, one star has stepped forward to emphatically state that she’d love to continue to reprise her role. According to a recent write-up in Slashfilm, The Flash‘es Sasha Calle has expressed interest in continuing to play Supergirl in the franchise after the doors have officially closed on the Snyderverse.
Sasha Calle is just one of many new names to appear in the DCU after James Gunn took the reigns as creative director of the comic book film studio, portraying Supergirl in the upcoming The Flash film. The studio has faced a tumultuous run thus far, struggling to face off against the many successful outings of the MCU at both the box office and in the overwhelming public opinion of fans worldwide. Before signing on to portray Supergirl, Calle was best known for her role as Lola Rosales in the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, appearing in nearly 300 episodes between 2018 and 2021.
Since many actors in comic book films sign on to appear in multiple pictures, it came as a surprise when James Gunn announced a standalone Supergirl film, without confirming if Sasha Calle would be coming back. The Supergirl film is said to be adapting the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic series which was originally published in the Summer of 2021. With reporters naturally wondering what’s next for the future DCU star, many have inquired Calle about the prospect of continuing to appear in the franchise after her splashy debut in The Flash.
Sasha Calle is enthusiastic about continuing to play Supergirl, but there seems to be no official word at this time regarding what James Gunn is proposing for the future of her character. While we don’t have much on the specifics of Calle’s Supergirl, it’s clear she’s from a different universe that doesn’t have a Superman, or lost its Superman, due to the actions of The Flash.
She’s playing Kara Zor-El, who appears in the DC comics as Superman’s cousin, but the multiversal nature of her first appearance makes it unclear if this version will be the same in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow or not, though at the moment, it looks like this will be a one and done appearance.
Obviously, getting an early foothold in James Gunn’s newly revamped DCU would be a huge career move, making Sasha Calle and any other performer lucky enough to appear in the post-The Flash film universe highly likely to cherish the opportunity. While the subversive DC creative head has been highly secretive about his plans for the franchise, Gunn’s announcement of a standalone Supergirl film serving as one of the only confirmed entries into the new franchise seems to bode well for Kara’s future, even if it could be anyone’s role in the future, including, potentially, Sydney Sweeney.
