We’ve got some disappointing news for Star Wars fans who have been hoping for a second season of the Disney+ TV show Obi-Wan Kenobi. In a recent interview with the Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy essentially shut down any hopes for another season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, stating that it was only a limited series and they do not have any plans to expand on it at the moment. It’s not a definitive no, but it certainly doesn’t sound like there’s a promising future.

The six-episode series in the Star Wars franchise aired on Disney+ on May 26, 2022, and starred Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader. The series took place about 10 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and about nine years before Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. The plot focused on Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi as he saved a young, kidnapped Princess Leia (played by Vivien Lyra Blair) while having to battle Imperial Inquisitors and the evil Darth Vader.

Star Wars fans and critics alike all seemed to enjoy Obi-Wan Kenobi, which currently holds an 82 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.1 out of 10 rating on IMDb. It also won several awards, including Best Action for a TV/Streaming Service from the Golden Trailer Awards and Best Limited Event Series (Streaming) from the Saturn Awards. After the show received such great reviews and viewership, it seems surprising that Lucasfilm does not want to pick it up for another season.

Lucasfilm, which is widely known for producing the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises, may be losing its edge, especially after Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny received such poor reviews. And with so many Star Wars projects in the works, perhaps the production company is choosing to leave Obi-Wan Kenobi as a limited series rather than try to juggle too many projects simultaneously.

In addition to the three new Star Wars movies that will be coming out in the next few years, there are also several Star Wars TV shows in the works, including new seasons of The Mandalorian, Andor, and Young Jedi Adventures, just to name a few. With so many crisscrossing timelines and characters, it can be overwhelming for fans to keep track of all that is going on, or for new fans of the franchise to catch up. So, while some fans will be disappointed that there won’t be a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi, other fans might just breathe a sigh of relief.

Luckily for the talented Ewan McGregor, he won’t be out of work soon if the Star Wars franchise suddenly stops. The Obi-Wan Kenobi star has plenty of upcoming projects on his plate, including Everest, A Gentleman in Moscow, and The Land of Sometimes, which are all currently in production or pre-production. In addition to acting, he is also serving as executive producer on A Gentleman in Moscow and the upcoming crime TV series Lodi.
