A New Company Is Giving Away Free Big Screen TVs For Every Subscriber
The co-founder of Pluto TV has a new company called Telly that is giving away free TVs in exchange for tracking data.
You get a TV and you get a TV!! Sound familiar? While this might not be an old episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, it is a cry coming from Pluto TV as their co-founder Ilya Pozin tells The Hollywood Reporter that every citizen across these great United States deserves a free, ad-supported TV. That’s right, the streamer that’s currently owned by the home of Star Trek: Picard and Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Paramount, is dropping an exciting bomb in the future of home entertainment.
During her reveal, the Pluto TV co-founder showed off the newly dubbed Telly, a company that aims to freely hand out millions of top-grade TVs for not even one penny. For Pozin, the idea shakes down to what’s fair for consumers when it comes to what they spend on a television versus what they’re then forced to engage with via ads. In her statement, she said that Telly is hoping to level the playing field between “consumers” who are expected to “pay for both TV and the content they watch” and companies who rake in “billions of dollars from ads served on televisions.”
Bringing her vision for Pluto TV into focus, Pozin said that she used this as a launching pad for what was needed to bring Telly to life. Hoping to shake up the way that viewers take in their programs, she not only wants to ensure that customers can tune in for completely free shows but that the device from which they’re watching is also completely free of charge.
Of course, our immediate thought was to lean toward pessimism and question how tiny or old the TV sets would be but the Pluto TV co-founder immediately painted a clear picture of what model future viewers could look forward to. The screen is a 55-inch 4K HDR with an impressive five-driver sound bar below it with yet another smart screen under that. For those of us who may need to see behind our sets, a bright LED light has been installed in the back that’s able to be turned off with the click of a button.
Also included is an HD camera for video calling or at-home gym classes, state-of-the-art picture-in-picture, and so much more. So, where’s the catch? While the Pluto TV co-founder says that the icing on top is that you’ll be able to use whatever OS you’d like, from Roku to Fire TV, your viewing will be tracked by Telly – and then some.
The “value exchange” will come in the form of data with Pozin commenting that she expects to know everything about her consumers from their income to what car they’re driving to when their lease is up. We knew it was too good to be true.
The moral of the story is that everything comes with a price tag even if it isn’t technically for financial gain. Although it would be absolutely bomb to catch your next episode of The Witcher or Succession on this super high-def setup, even this incredible offer from the folks behind Pluto TV comes with a hefty price.
