Winnie The Pooh Is Getting A Violent Horror Game
A Winnie the Pooh indie horror game titled Hundred Acre Wood is being developed.
Winnie the Pooh, a beloved character from children’s literature, is getting a violent horror video game. The news dropped only a few short months after the release of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a horror movie in which Winnie is the killer, and another adult-oriented project centered around Christopher Robin, Winnie’s friend.
According to ComicBook.com, the new indie horror game is called Hundred Acre Wood, and it’s turning the beloved children’s character into a nightmarish creature that chases gamers through the iconic forest. The trailer for the game shows promise, as the game gives a completely unique twist on the popular children’s story, in which the Wood was twisted by other world powers, and players have to rescue Christopher Robin while running away from Winnie the Pooh and investigating what exactly happened with the Wood.
Fortunately, the players will receive aid from other Winnie the Pooh characters, including Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Piglet, and Kanga, all of which have been confirmed for the upcoming game. As for the gameplay itself, apart from what we already mentioned, Hundred Acre Wood is actually a first-person game set in a rich story-filled world—at least according to developers—that will grant players a lot of freedom for exploration and puzzle-solving. So, it’s more than just running away from a murderous bear.
Unfortunately, Winnie the Pooh game still doesn’t have a release date, and it’s listed on Steam as “coming soon.” However, given the popularity of horrific iterations of Disney‘s characters, it’s likely that we’ll hear more about the game as time goes on. Many know Winnie the Pooh as a children’s literature character who leads a simple and quiet life of loving honey and spending time with Piglet and Christopher Robin, his best friend, and companion. And, for the better part of the past century, Winnie was just that, a positive and happy figure.
However, the imagination runs rampant, and many artists have produced various works of art portraying beloved characters from our childhood as the stuff of nightmares. Needless to say, the horrific fan art, and Winnie the Pooh among them, quickly gained popularity among older audiences. Fortunately for such audiences, Disney’s exclusive rights for the character ended last year, and Winnie the Pooh officially entered the public domain in the US, which also meant an open season for the beloved bear.
This resulted in the aforementioned Blood and Honey horror film, which is actually getting a sequel, despite being panned by the critics—because, regardless of how great the idea is, horror movies simply aren’t what they used to be. Of course, the recently released Evil Dead Rise is an obvious exception to the previous statement. So, given that the IP is now open for various interpretations, without indie developers having to pay excessive licensing fees to Disney, it was only a matter of time before Winne the Pooh received a horror-game treatment.
The upcoming Winnie the Pooh game, titled Hundred Acre Wood, is currently in development, but it currently lacks a release date and a list of supported platforms.
