Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Is The End Of Marvel Greatness
With audiences suffering from superhero fatigue and the excellence that was the final Guardians movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is likely the end of great Marvel movies.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was released only a few days ago, and it has been getting incredible reviews from audiences. With such moving characters, heartwarming (and heartbreaking) moments, and a captivating story, the whole trilogy stands on its own as the best Marvel creation. This could signal the end of Marvel’s successful universe, because how can any other film possibly top James Gunn’s powerful story of Rocket Raccoon?
The new Guardians of the Galaxy movie shines light on all of its main characters, including a depressed, broken-hearted Star-Lord (played by Chris Pratt), a revitalized, bitter Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana), and a responsible badass Nebula (played by Karen Gillen) as they battle to save their dear friend, Rocket (played by Bradley Cooper). The Guardians team up to find the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), all the while learning about Rocket’s tragic backstory that has led him to become the closed-off asshole that we all know and love.
Some audiences were brought to tears throughout Guardians of the Galaxy 3 as they watched how powerful the bond between friends can be, and how it can inspire us to save lives, regardless of how small. Paired with yet another killer soundtrack (this time including newer hits from the Beastie Boys and Florence+ The Machine), it is easily one of the best Marvel films ever created.
A huge reason for the film’s success is the mind behind the franchise: writer, director, and producer James Gunn, who wrote and directed all three of the Guardians of the Galaxy films. James Gunn was fired by Marvel/Disney over controversial tweets, but he was quickly hired by DC to write and direct their superhero movies instead. He was brought back to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy 3, likely because there’s no one who could fill his shoes and perfectly wrap up the trilogy in the way that he did.
Superman: Legacy (coming July 11, 2025) will be the first DC film from James Gunn, and it will hopefully have the same humor and heart that we have come to expect from the talented creative.
In addition to James Gunn’s absence from Marvel, two key actors, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, have confirmed that they will not reprise their Guardians roles in the Marvel universe. Meanwhile, two other Guardians actors, Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis), have expressed interest in following James Gunn to the DC Universe. They both have specific characters in mind that they would like to play, and the writer and director is definitely interested in working with them again.
Much of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fate is now in the hands of producer Kevin Feige. He has produced countless Marvel films, including the Thor films, Ant-Man films, Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and the upcoming The Marvels, Captain America 2, and Wonder Man. With so many projects on his plate, and so many crisscrossing storylines in the Marvel universe, it’s hard to imagine that each film will receive the care and consideration that was put into the Guardians franchise. On top of this, audiences are experiencing superhero fatigue as they try and keep up with all ever-growing amount of Marvel movies and TV shows.
As we wait to see if Marvel fails, we’ll also wait to see how Star-Lord will make his return. The end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy 3 revealed that the legendary Star-Lord will return, but audiences aren’t certain if this means there will be a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 or if he will return in a different MCU film. And since nothing is guaranteed in Hollywood, who knows if Chris Pratt will even reprise his role as Star-Lord.
