Ezra Miller’s The Flash Delay Is A Good Thing According To DC Producer
The Flash producer Barbara Muschietti says the multiple delays in the film's production gave it more time for development.
Following countless delays, from director swaps to the global pandemic, The Flash, starring Ezra Miller, is set to hit theaters on June 16. Speaking about the DCU film via CBR, producer Barbara Muschietti said the setbacks were not the worst thing. “We are very grateful to [Warner Bros] for working with us on using all this time to make the [The Flash] better,” she said.
She noted that the team has been working on The Flash for almost four years and credited the pandemic for more development time. “It allowed us to explore visual effects like never before,” Muschietti said about the Ezra Miller film. She added that the movie belongs in theaters, so the production team was “happy to wait for the right time.”
“The only way to release The Flash is in theaters,” filmmaker Andy Muschietti said of the Ezra Miller-led movie. “Warner [Bros] knew that, and we knew that.” The studio first announced a solo film about the Scarlet Speedster in 2014. But the 2018 release date kept changing because different people were working on the project.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley were initially attached to the project. The duo envisioned the character as a more down-to-earth superhero. But they left the project due to creative differences with the movie’s star. However, they don’t hold any grudge against the DC alum, describing Ezra Miller as an “intense and very bright” actor.
Andy Muschietti was eventually hired to helm The Flash from a script by Christina Hodson, worthy of its star Ezra Miller. The story follows Barry Allen, who uses the Speed Force to travel back in time and save his mother’s life. However, changing the past has severe and unintended consequences, and Barry finds himself stuck in a world without other superheroes.
When General Zod threatens humanity, Barry enlists the help of an older Batman and a Kryptonian stranded on Earth to defeat him. The film recently raced into CinemaCon as Warner Bros. held an early screening for theater owners. Head of DC Studios, Peter Safran, talked about The Flash (via The Hollywood Reporter) before the event and praised Ezra Miller.
Andy Muschietti, who was also in attendance, shared the sentiment saying, “I discovered they are an incredible comedian and also [handled] all the action required for a big spectacle like this. They wanted to do all the stunts, and I let them.” The Flash closed the convention with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav calling it the best superhero movie he’s ever seen.
The Flash sees Ezra Miller take on two roles as different versions of Barry Allen. Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck star as different versions of Batman, while Sashe Calle appears as Supergirl. Michael Shannon reprises his role of General Zod, a character he previously portrayed in 2013’s Man of Steel.
The Flash release follows a tumultuous 2022 for Ezra Miller, who was arrested several times. The actor later apologized for their erratic behavior, saying they would receive help for “complex mental health issues.” Safran was supportive of the star, saying, “Ezra is completely committed to their recovery.” It is unclear if they will reprise the role in future DC projects.
